Prompt And Input Packet

The shared packet below is the prompt body common to every model call. Each provider call appends a small model-specific identifier block shown after the artifacts.

Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 31,247 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v3.0 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic judgment without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to rank assets for realized return over exactly one week and identify candidates that can beat SPY. CapitalBench, not you, constructs the scored portfolio from your judgment using the fixed rule below.

The deterministic candidate slate exists to prevent omission; it is not a recommendation. Assess every slate candidate. You may add at most two wildcard options from the complete allowed universe, but only when the frozen briefing supplies a specific reason the mechanical slate missed.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, table order, and slate inclusion as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Do not extrapolate recent returns mechanically. A recent winner has no positive edge without independent in-window support. Give extreme recent losers a fair reversal test, but distinguish temporary price overreaction from fundamental deterioration. Use the supplied cross-sectional dispersion, medium-horizon relative strength, volatility, drawdown, volume, briefing evidence, and quality evidence. Optimize for the stated close-to-close scoring window only.

For every assessed candidate, provide probabilities and an 80% excess-return range relative to SPY. Rank every assessment without ties. top3_option_ids must be the options ranked 1, 2, and 3. prefer_spy is a diagnostic judgment and does not override the deterministic rule.

CapitalBench applies this rule after your response:

1. Preserve your candidate ranks.
2. A non-SPY candidate is eligible only when you label its recent return as overreaction and give it at least a 55% probability of beating SPY.
3. Select at most the first three eligible candidates in your rank order.
4. Fill fixed portfolio slots of 35%, 35%, and 30% in that order.
5. Put every unused slot in SPY.

You do not submit allocations or an alternative portfolio. Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

## Briefing

# Market Briefing — October 10, 2026

Research cutoff: 2026-10-11T00:51:00Z. Latest completed U.S. session: October 9. Weekly exit: October 16; monthly exit: November 9.

This briefing provides fixed factual datapoints only. It does not rank, recommend, analyze, or map facts to CapitalBench options. ## Economic releases

BLS reported September payroll growth of 29,000 and unemployment of 4.2% on October 2. July and August payroll estimates were revised down by a combined 60,000. Average hourly earnings rose 0.1% monthly and 3.0% annually. Payroll estimates are preliminary and subject to sampling error and revisions.

BEA's September 30 release reported August real consumer spending up 0.6% and nominal spending up 0.9%. The PCE price index rose 0.3% monthly and 3.4% annually; excluding food and energy, increases were 0.2% and 3.0%. These estimates incorporated an annual historical update.

ISM reported September services activity at 54.9, down from 55.4 in August, with business activity at 56.5, new orders at 59.8, and employment at 50.1. Its prices index rose to 74.0, the highest since July 2022. These diffusion indexes measure the breadth of survey responses rather than the magnitude of output changes.

The Census Bureau's October 8 wholesale report placed August sales at $817.5 billion, up 1.8% monthly and 15.6% annually. Inventories were $964.2 billion, up 0.5% monthly and 6.4% annually, and the inventories-to-sales ratio was 1.18 versus 1.28 a year earlier. July sales growth was revised from 0.8% to 1.0%. Values are seasonally adjusted but not adjusted for prices and can be revised.

BEA and Census reported an August goods-and-services trade deficit of $105.6 billion on October 6, versus a revised $92.8 billion in July. Exports were $315.2 billion and imports $420.8 billion, up 1.4% and 4.3% monthly. Headline trade values are not price adjusted.

## Policy and cross-asset observations

Federal Reserve minutes released October 7 record unanimous support at the September meeting for raising the policy range to 3.75%-4.00%. Most participants assessed that another increase would likely be appropriate by year end, while emphasizing that subsequent decisions depend on incoming information. Participants described solid activity and elevated inflation; several also noted pressure on lower-income households from energy costs. The minutes describe the September meeting, not a new October policy decision.

Treasury's October 9 par yields were 4.47% at one year, 4.80% at two years, 5.02% at five years, 5.24% at ten years, and 5.60% at thirty years. On October 8 those yields were 4.44%, 4.75%, 4.99%, 5.22%, and 5.60%. These yields are derived from indicative quotations rather than transaction prices.

The October 9 U.S. close showed the S&P 500 up 0.6% to 7,811.54, the Dow up 0.8% to 51,654.95, the Nasdaq Composite up 0.6% to 27,366.17, and the Russell 2000 up 0.5% to 2,806.98. Their full-week changes were +1.2%, +0.9%, +0.6%, and -0.9%, respectively. CapitalBench's official ETF entry prices are supplied separately.

EIA's October 6 energy outlook forecast fourth-quarter Brent crude at $105 per barrel, $14 above its prior forecast, while estimating September Middle East production shut-ins at 4.8 million barrels per day versus 5.8 million in August. Its forecast inputs were completed October 1 and did not specifically incorporate later events. EIA's October 7 weekly report placed national distillate stocks at 105.1 million barrels for October 2, versus 121.6 million a year earlier; East Coast stocks were 21.7 million versus 30.2 million. Weekly estimates can be revised and displayed totals are rounded.

## Scheduled releases

Inside the weekly horizon, September CPI is scheduled for October 14 at 08:30 ET, PPI for October 15 at 08:30 ET, and import/export prices for October 16 at 08:30 ET. The holiday-delayed EIA petroleum report is scheduled for October 15 at 12:00 ET.

The monthly horizon additionally includes the October 27-28 FOMC meeting; advance third-quarter GDP and September income/PCE on October 29 at 08:30 ET; the Employment Cost Index on October 30; manufacturing activity on November 2; job openings on November 3; international trade and services activity on November 4; preliminary productivity on November 5; and October employment on November 6. September wholesale sales and inventories are scheduled for November 9 at 10:00 ET, before the monthly exit close. All scheduled outcomes are unknown at the cutoff.

Required JSON format:

Rationale

Only the two highest-quality semiconductor-linked pullbacks, SMH and EWT, combine a top-decile prior trend, a deep recent pullback, and no in-input fundamental deterioration; they get marginal overreaction labels just above the 55% threshold. Momentum and Technology are similar but milder setups with no clear edge. Korea's drawdown and distance from highs look like trend damage, regional banks and small value show persistent weakness under a hawkish Fed, and Brazil, cybersecurity and crypto rely on price action alone. The rest of the portfolio defaults to SPY given the CPI/PPI catalyst risk.

SPY sits at its 52-week high after a +1.2% week while breadth was mixed and the Fed is in a hiking cycle with yields rising (10y 5.24%). Cross-sectional dispersion is high (21.5%). The week contains CPI, PPI and import prices, which are the dominant catalysts; ISM prices at 74 and 3.4% PCE raise the risk of a hot print. High-beta semis, Korea and Taiwan pulled back sharply against a still-strong prior trend, which is the classic quality-pullback setup, but a hot CPI would hurt these high-beta names most. Edge is modest; I favor a selective reversal in the highest-quality pullbacks and treat the rest as no edge.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Taiwan Equities (EWT): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • A hot September CPI on October 14 (ISM prices 74, PCE 3.4%) could push yields higher and hit high-beta semis and Taiwan hardest
  • The semiconductor pullback may reflect fundamental repricing not visible in the briefing, extending losses rather than reversing
  • Further dollar strength and rising real yields pressure non-US equities and risk assets broadly
  • Elevated volatility (28-31%) in SMH and EWT widens the loss tail relative to SPY within one week

Korea's drawdown and distance from highs look like trend damage, regional banks and small value show persistent weakness under a hawkish Fed, and Brazil, cybersecurity and crypto rely on price action alone. Rationale

Only the semiconductor pullback reaches the 55% eligibility threshold, as a quality reversal after the strongest prior trend. Taiwan and tech are directionally favored but below threshold, so the remaining slots default to SPY. CPI-driven rate risk tempers conviction.

SPY rose 1.16% over 5 sessions while semis, Korea, and crypto pulled back sharply after strong prior trends. Rising yields (10y 5.24%), a hawkish Fed, and the CPI release on Oct 14 with ISM prices at 74 create rate risk for high-beta growth. Measured dispersion is inflated by the ETHA data anomaly but is genuinely high.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 65% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • Hot CPI on Oct 14 pushes yields higher and hits high-beta semis
  • A hawkish Fed repricing extends the tech pullback
  • Semiconductor weakness reflects undisclosed fundamental news
  • Middle East energy shock triggers a risk-off move

Rationale

The portfolio targets high-quality assets that have experienced recent pullbacks, anticipating a reversal over the 1-week horizon. SOUTH_KOREA, SEMICONDUCTORS, and REGIONAL_BANKS offer potential for outperformance based on their quality scores and recent negative active returns.

The market is showing mixed signals with recent payroll growth and elevated inflation, while the Fed signals potential further rate hikes. The 1-week horizon suggests a cautious approach, balancing potential reversals in oversold sectors with defensive positioning.

Portfolio
  • South Korea Equities (EWY): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 60% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Continued market volatility due to inflation concerns and potential Fed rate hikes.
  • Sector-specific risks in semiconductors and regional banks if economic data disappoints.

Rationale

Oil has the strongest independent case for reversal because supply constraints contrast with substantial trailing underperformance. Semiconductors narrowly meet the reversal threshold on the combination of an unusually deep pullback, strong preceding relative performance and unexceptional selling volume. Technology and other quality pullbacks remain below the eligibility threshold because inflation and rates can explain their weakness. The deterministic rule therefore retains a benchmark slot rather than forcing a third eligible selection.

Inflation releases on October 14-16 dominate the one-week window. Elevated services prices, oil supply constraints and hawkish Fed minutes compete with weak payroll growth. Selected pullbacks merit reversal consideration, but higher yields provide a genuine reason for repricing rather than evidence of indiscriminate overreaction. Reported dispersion is high, although Ethereum's extreme observations make its magnitude unreliable. Quality scores are price-derived evidence, not independent fundamental confirmation.

Portfolio
  • Crude Oil (USO): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • Hot CPI or PPI could raise yields further and extend semiconductor and technology underperformance.
  • Production shut-ins were already declining; further supply normalization or bearish petroleum data could reverse oil's rebound.
  • Oil forecasts and macro releases are already public, so their directional implications may be priced in.
  • Ethereum anomalies and differences between three-session returns and five-session active returns reduce confidence in mechanical comparisons.
  • Price-derived quality scores do not establish earnings resilience or rule out fundamental deterioration.

Rationale

High quality scores and recent pullbacks in semiconductors, technology, and momentum support reversal edge over benchmark in one-week window.

Mixed macro data with upcoming CPI and policy signals create short-term uncertainty; high-quality names with recent pullbacks show reversal potential while benchmark remains stable.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Technology Sector (XLK): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 59% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Momentum Equities (MTUM): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • CPI and PPI releases within horizon
  • Fed policy signal sensitivity
  • Elevated volatility in growth names

Rationale

Quality pullback shock-reversal names in semis and related Asia equities show the cleanest overreaction setup after strong priors; mild edge only and high event risk from CPI keep overall preference for SPY fill under the deterministic rule.

High cross-sectional dispersion with tech/Asia semiconductor-linked names in sharp pullback after strong prior active trends, while SPY near flat; upcoming CPI/PPI and elevated yields/Fed minutes support mixed reversal vs continuation risks over one week.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • South Korea Equities (EWY): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Taiwan Equities (EWT): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • September CPI on Oct 14 and PPI on Oct 15 could reprice rates and growth equities sharply
  • Elevated Treasury yields and hawkish Sept FOMC minutes raise discount-rate pressure on high-beta tech/Asia
  • Semiconductor and Korea/Taiwan beta >2 amplifies any risk-off move
  • Crypto and EM volume dislocations may not mean-revert inside one week

Rationale

Highest-ranked names are high-beta Asia/semiconductor pullbacks with prior strength, but none clear a 55% chance of beating SPY into CPI/PPI and a still-hawkish rate path. Prefer the benchmark over forcing reversal trades in 30-45% vol sleeves.

Five-session active-return dispersion is elevated at 21.54% while SPY is near a 52-week high after a modest weekly gain. Hawkish September FOMC minutes, rising Treasury yields, and CPI/PPI inside the scoring window favor mixed mean-reversion in high-beta Asia/tech pullbacks versus continuation in already-extended names.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 100% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • September CPI on October 14 and PPI on October 15 can reprice growth and duration simultaneously.
  • Fed minutes already flag another hike as likely by year-end with 10-year yield at 5.24%.
  • Korea/Taiwan/semis betas above 2 amplify any risk-off if inflation prints hot.
  • Brazil and crypto volume/vol extremes can reverse independently of SPY.
