# CapitalBench portfolio-v3.0 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic judgment without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to rank assets for realized return over exactly one month and identify candidates that can beat SPY. CapitalBench, not you, constructs the scored portfolio from your judgment using the fixed rule below.

The deterministic candidate slate exists to prevent omission; it is not a recommendation. Assess every slate candidate. You may add at most two wildcard options from the complete allowed universe, but only when the frozen briefing supplies a specific reason the mechanical slate missed.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, table order, and slate inclusion as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Do not extrapolate recent returns mechanically. A recent winner has no positive edge without independent in-window support. Give extreme recent losers a fair reversal test, but distinguish temporary price overreaction from fundamental deterioration. Use the supplied cross-sectional dispersion, medium-horizon relative strength, volatility, drawdown, volume, briefing evidence, and quality evidence. Optimize for the stated close-to-close scoring window only.

For every assessed candidate, provide probabilities and an 80% excess-return range relative to SPY. Rank every assessment without ties. top3_option_ids must be the options ranked 1, 2, and 3. prefer_spy is a diagnostic judgment and does not override the deterministic rule.

CapitalBench applies this rule after your response:

1. Preserve your candidate ranks.
2. A non-SPY candidate is eligible only when you label its recent return as overreaction and give it at least a 55% probability of beating SPY.
3. Select at most the first three eligible candidates in your rank order.
4. Fill fixed portfolio slots of 35%, 35%, and 30% in that order.
5. Put every unused slot in SPY.

You do not submit allocations or an alternative portfolio. Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

Only cybersecurity passes the overreaction-plus-55% test: a top-ranked prior trend, shallow drawdown, benign volume, and moderate beta into a high-rate, high-oil FOMC week. Everything else on the slate is either a shock candidate with a negative multi-window trend (defense, solar, robotics, industrials), a high-beta recent winner without in-window support (semis, Taiwan, crypto), or a rate-sensitive small-cap or muni exposure facing rising yields and collapsing consumer sentiment. Given poor breadth and mega-cap resilience, SPY remains the default for the remaining slots.

Stagflationary backdrop: August CPI 3.4% headline with re-accelerating core, Brent above $100 on unresolved Iran conflict, 10y at 4.96% and 30y at 5.35%, consumer sentiment collapsing to 47.8 with inflation expectations jumping to 4.6%. Breadth is poor (equal-weight lagging SPY by 1.75% over 21 sessions, only ~23% of assets positive). The FOMC on Sept 15-16 is a binary catalyst; high rates and oil favor cap-weighted mega-cap resilience over cyclicals and small caps. Dispersion is high (oil, crypto, Korea, Brazil far from the pack) but most equity sub-groups are in shallow drawdowns rather than shock lows, so genuine reversal setups are scarce. Cybersecurity is the one candidate combining a strong prior relative trend, modest pullback, low volume stress and low beta to an oil/rates shock.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 65% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • FOMC on Sept 15-16 could signal a more hawkish path given 3.4% CPI and 4.6% inflation expectations, hitting growth and high-beta tech including cybersecurity
  • Brent above $100 with the Iran conflict unresolved could spike further, compressing margins and pushing yields higher across the window
  • Consumer sentiment at 47.8 and weak Russell 2000 breadth may herald a broader risk-off that pushes SPY lower and widens losses in anything with beta above 1
  • Cybersecurity's 31% volatility means a single sector earnings or guidance disappointment could erase the expected modest edge

Rationale

Rank 1-3 are quality pullback names with strong prior relative trends, shallow drawdowns and modest recent underperformance, giving genuine mean-reversion setups rather than mechanical loser-buying. Cybersecurity carries the strongest combination of prior leadership and recent relative dip. Small-cap and small-value have the highest quality evidence scores and are pressured by rate uncertainty that the September FOMC could resolve. Deep losers (solar, aerospace/defense, robotics) show persistent multi-window deterioration and were rated as such; crypto and semis carry high variance without independent in-window support.

Broad market slightly weak into an FOMC meeting with sticky 3.4% headline CPI, 2.4% core, and deteriorating consumer sentiment (47.8). Oil spike from unresolved Iran conflict is boosting energy/commodities while pressuring cyclicals and small caps. Breadth is poor (positive asset share ~20-23%, RSP lagging SPY by 1.75% over 21 sessions), so mega-cap cap-weighted SPY is a hard benchmark. Best asymmetric setups are high-quality prior leaders that pulled back modestly (CYBERSECURITY) and quality small-cap pullbacks that could re-rate if the FOMC leans dovish.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Small-Cap Value (IWN): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • Hawkish FOMC on September 15-16 with sticky 3.4% CPI would hurt small caps and high-beta growth
  • Continued narrow breadth (positive asset share ~20%) means cap-weighted SPY can outperform diversified pullback trades
  • Oil above $100 from unresolved Iran conflict could squeeze margins and consumer demand further
  • Consumer sentiment collapse to 47.8 with rising inflation expectations signals stagflationary demand risk
  • Cybersecurity's high 31% volatility can overwhelm a modest expected reversion edge in one month

Rationale

Energy has the strongest independently supported relative-return thesis but is continuation, not an eligible reversal. Cybersecurity and aerospace/defense narrowly clear the reversal threshold; their classifications are tentative rather than claims of verified mispricing. Small-company pullbacks remain below the required confidence threshold because inflation and domestic-demand risks offset their favorable mechanical quality evidence. The deterministic rule therefore retains a benchmark slot.

Energy-supply stress, rising inflation expectations and weak household sentiment favor selective exposures rather than a broad rebound. Dispersion appears high from the option-level spreads, although the aggregate dispersion field is missing. Quality pullbacks offer limited reversal opportunities, but the supplied quality scores measure price behavior rather than business fundamentals. The September FOMC and subsequent economic releases can materially change relative returns before October 14.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • A hawkish September FOMC or further inflation pressure could prolong growth-stock and financing-sensitive equity weakness.
  • Iran-related de-escalation could rapidly reverse energy leadership and weaken the defense sentiment thesis.
  • Cybersecurity and aerospace weakness may reflect information absent from the briefing rather than temporary overreaction.
  • Entry-close repricing may absorb part of the inferred edge, and scheduled data releases may overturn the macro assessment before October 14.

Rationale

Top reversal candidates show quality scores above 0.79 with recent active underperformance but no fundamental deterioration signals.

Quality pullbacks amid elevated rates and upcoming FOMC create selective reversal potential; broad equity dispersion remains contained.

Rationale

Quality pullbacks in cybersecurity and small-value plus deep aerospace underperformance offer the cleanest overreaction setups with p_beat >=55; remaining slate names either lack sufficient edge, show continuation risk, or carry fundamental/vol drag, so the deterministic rule will likely leave material weight in SPY.

Sticky CPI, weak sentiment, elevated yields, unresolved oil supply shock and imminent FOMC create cross-asset dispersion; recent breadth is poor with many quality names in pullback while mega-cap and energy/crypto show divergent paths, favoring selective reversal over pure continuation into the one-month window.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Small-Cap Value (IWN): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • FOMC Sept 15-16 decision and SEP could reprice yields sharply against duration-sensitive and high-beta names
  • Unresolved Iran-related oil supply keeps energy volatility elevated and may pressure risk assets
  • Sticky CPI 3.4% and rising consumer inflation expectations risk further equity multiple compression
  • Narrow market breadth (~20% positive assets) can persist, delaying small-cap and industrial catch-up

Rationale

Highest-ranked names are quality pullbacks and a high-quality cyber lag, but none clear a 55% one-month beat-SPY bar into FOMC, sticky CPI, and weak breadth. Crypto continuation is noisy after a large 21-session bounce, solar looks like deterioration not a clean overreaction, and munis are defensive with little excess-return path versus SPY.

Breadth is weak with only about one-fifth of assets positive over 5 and 21 sessions, SPY is modestly negative into an FOMC week, CPI is 3.4% with rising Michigan inflation expectations, and oil remains elevated. That mix favors mixed reversal-versus-continuation rather than a clean one-month trend.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 100% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • Unknown FOMC September 15–16 outcome and SEP can reprice duration, growth, and high-beta tech in the scoring window.
  • CPI 3.4% and Michigan year-ahead inflation expectations at 4.6% can keep real-rate pressure on cyclicals and small caps.
  • Unresolved Iran-related oil supply conditions after Brent near $104–110 can shock industrials, defense, and risk appetite.
  • Weak 5-session positive-asset share near 20% raises gap-down and correlation-spike risk for high-beta slate names.
