Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 34,002 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v3.0 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic judgment without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to rank assets for realized return over exactly one month and identify candidates that can beat SPY. CapitalBench, not you, constructs the scored portfolio from your judgment using the fixed rule below.

The deterministic candidate slate exists to prevent omission; it is not a recommendation. Assess every slate candidate. You may add at most two wildcard options from the complete allowed universe, but only when the frozen briefing supplies a specific reason the mechanical slate missed.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, table order, and slate inclusion as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Do not extrapolate recent returns mechanically. A recent winner has no positive edge without independent in-window support. Give extreme recent losers a fair reversal test, but distinguish temporary price overreaction from fundamental deterioration. Use the supplied cross-sectional dispersion, medium-horizon relative strength, volatility, drawdown, volume, briefing evidence, and quality evidence. Optimize for the stated close-to-close scoring window only.

For every assessed candidate, provide probabilities and an 80% excess-return range relative to SPY. Rank every assessment without ties. top3_option_ids must be the options ranked 1, 2, and 3. prefer_spy is a diagnostic judgment and does not override the deterministic rule.

CapitalBench applies this rule after your response:

1. Preserve your candidate ranks.
2. A non-SPY candidate is eligible only when you label its recent return as overreaction and give it at least a 55% probability of beating SPY.
3. Select at most the first three eligible candidates in your rank order.
4. Fill fixed portfolio slots of 35%, 35%, and 30% in that order.
5. Put every unused slot in SPY.

You do not submit allocations or an alternative portfolio. Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

Ranked high-quality pullback reversals first: regional banks, real estate, and low-vol equities each lagged SPY by 8-10% in a narrow tech-driven rally while retaining solid quality evidence, and a likely dovish September FOMC after weak payrolls is a concrete in-window catalyst for rate-sensitive laggards. Tech/semis have fundamental support from NVIDIA but are continuation trades with elevated reversal risk after a 5.7% SPY month.

SPY up 5.7% over 21 sessions led by mega-cap tech (NVIDIA blowout quarter), but breadth is weak (RSP -3.1% active, majority of S&P decliners on 8/27). Defensives and rate-sensitives lagged sharply while yields drifted up. Weak payrolls (-23k) and a September FOMC with SEP raise odds of a dovish tilt that could lift lagging rate-sensitive quality pullbacks like regional banks and REITs.

Portfolio
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Real Estate Sector (XLRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Low Volatility Equities (SPLV): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • FOMC holds or signals hawkish SEP on elevated PCE (3.7% y/y), hurting rate-sensitive reversal picks
  • AI/tech rally persists, extending laggard underperformance of banks, REITs, and low-vol
  • August CPI/PPI prints hot mid-September, pushing yields higher
  • Regional banks exposed to credit deterioration if labor weakness broadens

Rationale

Ranking favors high-quality-evidence names whose prior relative trend was positive but which just suffered an outsized relative drawdown against a very narrow mega-cap tape: KRE and XLRE both combine top-decile pullback ranks with positive prior active returns, shallow drawdowns and light volume, consistent with flow-driven overreaction rather than fundamental damage into a window containing FOMC, payrolls and CPI. SPLV is a lower-conviction third leg on the same mean-reversion logic. Extended momentum leaders (crypto, Korea, semis, cyber) are held below SPY because their strength lacks independent in-window support and carries very high volatility.

Narrow mega-cap/AI led tape: SPY +5.71% over 21 sessions while equal-weight lagged by 3.06pp, defensives (XLU, XLP, SPLV, XLRE) deeply negative on an active basis, and rates drifting higher with sticky 3.3-3.7% core PCE. Fed on hold with hawkish dissents; September FOMC, August payrolls and CPI all fall inside the window. Dispersion is high (crypto, metals, Korea +20% active vs defensives -9%). Best risk-adjusted setups are quality names with strong prior trend plus a fresh relative pullback (REGIONAL_BANKS, REAL_ESTATE), not chasing extended momentum.

Portfolio
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 59% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Real Estate Sector (XLRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • Continued mega-cap/AI leadership keeps low-beta defensives and banks lagging SPY for another month
  • Hawkish September FOMC or hot August CPI pushes yields higher, hurting REAL_ESTATE and REGIONAL_BANKS
  • Credit or CRE deterioration turns the KRE pullback into fundamental repricing rather than overreaction
  • Weak August payrolls trigger a broad risk-off move where high-beta rebound in defensives is insufficient to offset index decline

Rationale

The portfolio targets defensive sectors (Utilities, Low Volatility, Real Estate) that have experienced recent pullbacks (overreactions) but possess high quality scores, offering potential for reversal in a mixed market environment.

The market is showing mixed signals with solid economic growth but elevated inflation, leading to a cautious stance from the Fed. Recent tech earnings (NVIDIA) were strong, but broader market participation is mixed.

Portfolio
  • Utilities Sector (XLU): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 60% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Low Volatility Equities (SPLV): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Real Estate Sector (XLRE): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Interest rates remain elevated, which could pressure rate-sensitive sectors like Utilities and Real Estate.
  • Inflation data could surprise to the upside, leading to a more hawkish Fed stance.

Rationale

Large value offers the strongest combination of prior relative strength, modest volatility, and a recent pullback amid narrow index leadership. Real estate and regional banks add higher-upside reversal exposure where quality scores and prior trends suggest the recent underperformance may be excessive, though all three edges are modest.

Narrow mega-cap leadership, weak breadth, softer labor and consumption data, elevated inflation, and high Treasury yields favor selective reversal and diversification over broad continuation. Scheduled CPI, employment, and FOMC events create substantial one-month dispersion risk.

Portfolio
  • US Large-Cap Value (IWD): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Real Estate Sector (XLRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Sticky August inflation or a hawkish September FOMC could keep yields elevated and pressure real estate and regional banks.
  • Further labor-market or credit deterioration could turn the financial-sector pullback into fundamental weakness.
  • Mega-cap technology leadership could remain narrow and prevent value-oriented reversals from beating SPY.
  • High-impact employment, CPI, retail-sales, and housing releases could cause abrupt factor rotations before the exit close.

Rationale

Top ranks favor continuation in cybersecurity and technology with reversal potential in regional banks meeting overreaction criteria; remaining slots default to SPY per rule.

Defensive sectors show deep recent pullbacks with high quality scores while select tech names exhibit continuation; one-month window offers limited broad catalysts beyond scheduled data releases.

Portfolio
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Real Estate Sector (XLRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 4: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Low Volatility Equities (SPLV): 30% - V3 selected model rank 5: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.

Rationale

Growth/tech names show the clearest supported continuation from NVIDIA and relative strength, but none of the overreaction defensives clear a high-confidence 55%+ beat threshold with strong catalysts inside the one-month window; prefer benchmark given mixed macro and elevated rates.

Tech/AI strength from NVIDIA results supports growth continuation while rate-sensitive defensives and low-vol lag amid sticky inflation, soft labor, and elevated yields; mixed cross-section with limited clean one-month edges versus SPY.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 100% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • Sticky PCE/CPI and elevated Treasury yields could pressure duration-sensitive and growth multiples before September FOMC
  • Soft July payrolls and retail sales raise recession-scare risk that hits high-beta tech/semis
  • High horizon volatility in semis, cyber, Korea, and crypto can reverse quickly on any AI or risk-off headline
  • September employment, CPI, and FOMC SEP releases inside the scoring window may drive sharp factor rotation

Rationale

One-month edge versus SPY is thin: tech leadership has independent NVIDIA support but already-extended betas and a hawkish-leaning September calendar; lagged defensives look like rate overshoots rather than high-confidence 55% beaters. Rank order therefore favors the supported growth cluster then the benchmark, with no eligible overreaction at the 55% threshold.

SPY is near a 52-week high with mega-cap/tech leadership while equal-weight and rate-sensitive defensives lag; inflation remains elevated, the Fed is on hold with hawkish dissent, and a dense September data/FOMC calendar argues against a clean one-month continuation or reversal regime.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 100% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • September 16 FOMC and SEP could reprice duration and growth stocks if the Committee stays restrictive.
  • August CPI/PPI and September 4 payrolls can reverse both mega-cap continuation and rate-sensitive mean reversion.
  • High-vol semiconductors, Korea, oil, and crypto can gap versus SPY on inventory, China PMI, or risk-off flows.
