Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 31,205 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v3.0 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic judgment without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to rank assets for realized return over exactly one month and identify candidates that can beat SPY. CapitalBench, not you, constructs the scored portfolio from your judgment using the fixed rule below.

The deterministic candidate slate exists to prevent omission; it is not a recommendation. Assess every slate candidate. You may add at most two wildcard options from the complete allowed universe, but only when the frozen briefing supplies a specific reason the mechanical slate missed.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, table order, and slate inclusion as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Do not extrapolate recent returns mechanically. A recent winner has no positive edge without independent in-window support. Give extreme recent losers a fair reversal test, but distinguish temporary price overreaction from fundamental deterioration. Use the supplied cross-sectional dispersion, medium-horizon relative strength, volatility, drawdown, volume, briefing evidence, and quality evidence. Optimize for the stated close-to-close scoring window only.

For every assessed candidate, provide probabilities and an 80% excess-return range relative to SPY. Rank every assessment without ties. top3_option_ids must be the options ranked 1, 2, and 3. prefer_spy is a diagnostic judgment and does not override the deterministic rule.

CapitalBench applies this rule after your response:

1. Preserve your candidate ranks.
2. A non-SPY candidate is eligible only when you label its recent return as overreaction and give it at least a 55% probability of beating SPY.
3. Select at most the first three eligible candidates in your rank order.
4. Fill fixed portfolio slots of 35%, 35%, and 30% in that order.
5. Put every unused slot in SPY.

You do not submit allocations or an alternative portfolio. Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Required JSON format:

Rationale

Semis combine a strong intact prior uptrend, a mild pullback, and an immediate Nvidia earnings catalyst inside the window. Regional banks and industrials are quality pullbacks with high evidence scores that benefit from falling yields and a likely dovish September FOMC. Crypto momentum and oil lack in-window fundamental support; solar and USD show ongoing deterioration.

Yields are falling (10y 4.63% from 4.74%) on weak payrolls, weak retail sales, and cooling CPI, raising odds of a dovish September FOMC. Prior leaders in tech/semis pulled back modestly while rate-sensitive groups sold off; a Nvidia earnings catalyst on Aug 26 and the Sept 15-16 FOMC dominate the window. Favor quality pullbacks in strong-trend groups and rate-sensitive reversal candidates.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Industrials Sector (XLI): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Nvidia earnings miss could hit semiconductors hard given 2.4 beta and 53% vol
  • Hot August CPI/PPI or hawkish FOMC on Sept 16 would reverse the rates tailwind for banks and industrials
  • Labor market deterioration (Sept 4 payrolls) could trigger broad risk-off, hurting cyclical picks
  • Payroll benchmark revisions Aug 28 could shift Fed expectations abruptly

Rationale

In a high-dispersion, mixed-pattern tape, the best risk-adjusted setups are high-quality relative pullbacks with shallow drawdowns and positive prior trends: industrials, regional banks and small-cap value all show deep recent active declines against solid prior relative strength, low-to-moderate volatility, and no briefing evidence of fundamental deterioration. Falling long yields and broadening breadth (RSP beating SPY over 5 sessions) support the domestic cyclical/value reversal. Persistent losers with negative trend in both windows (defense, utilities, solar, oil) and high-beta momentum extremes (crypto, semis into Nvidia) are excluded from the top ranks.

Broad indices near highs with 88% of assets positive over 21 sessions, but leadership is rotating hard: precious metals, EM and biotech leading while defense, industrials, utilities and regional banks sold off. Macro is soft-growth/sticky-inflation (payrolls -23k, core CPI 2.5%, PCE 3.3% core y/y) with the Fed on hold and a hawkish minority; 10y fell to 4.63%. Big in-window catalysts: Nvidia earnings, Jackson Hole, Sept 4 payrolls, Sept 11 CPI, Sept 15-16 FOMC. Dispersion is high, so a small number of high-quality relative pullbacks offers the cleanest reversal setups.

Portfolio
  • Industrials Sector (XLI): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Small-Cap Value (IWN): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Nvidia results on Aug 26 could drive a broad index move that swamps sector reversal edges
  • Sept 4 payrolls and Sept 11 CPI plus the Sept 15-16 FOMC could shift rates sharply against cyclicals and regional banks
  • Consumer softening (confidence 89.4, retail sales -0.6%, home sales -10.5%) could extend weakness in domestic cyclicals and small caps
  • Reversal candidates' pullbacks may reflect early fundamental deterioration not captured in the frozen briefing
  • Continued momentum in gold, metals and crypto could keep leadership away from value/cyclicals for the whole window

3 holdings Semiconductors (SMH)
Semiconductors (SMH) 35% Cybersecurity (CIBR) 35% Real Estate Sector (XLRE) 30%
Confidence
0.57
Run Type
official
Rationale

Semiconductors combine prior strength, a meaningful pullback, and an immediate earnings catalyst; cybersecurity offers the cleanest trend-backed reversal; real estate adds a lower-beta rate-sensitive reversal supported by declining Treasury yields. Conviction remains moderate because all three face consequential event risk.

Broad participation and falling Treasury yields favor selective pullback reversals, but weak labor and consumer data, persistent inflation, and major policy and earnings events create high cross-sectional dispersion and limit conviction.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Real Estate Sector (XLRE): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Nvidia results could trigger a broad semiconductor and growth-stock reversal after the entry close.
  • The September CPI and FOMC outcomes could push yields higher and hurt rate-sensitive real estate.
  • Weak employment, retail, and housing data could deteriorate further and pressure cyclical risk assets.
  • High thematic volatility could overwhelm the modest estimated median excess returns.

Rationale

Top ranks favor quality pullback and defensive reversal candidates with overreaction labels meeting 55% threshold for potential SPY outperformance.

Mixed signals with crypto short-term continuation offset by quality pullbacks in defensives and dollar; recent equity weakness shows limited reversal support within one-month window.

Portfolio
  • US Dollar (UUP): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Small-Cap Value (IWN): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Utilities Sector (XLU): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • crypto volatility spillover
  • macro data releases within window
  • rate sensitivity in defensives
  • volume dislocation reversal failure

Rationale

Rank priority goes to shock and quality pullbacks with cleaner overreaction read and moderate vol (aerospace/defense, regional banks, industrials) over stretched crypto continuation or structurally weak solar; SPY remains the default core given mixed macro signals and event density, with only clear overreaction names above the 55% beat threshold considered eligible under the fixed rule.

Cross-sectional dispersion is elevated with crypto short-term strength, rate-sensitive and industrial shock pullbacks, soft labor/housing prints, and a dense macro/Fed calendar inside the one-month window; edge is selective mean-reversion in quality pullbacks rather than broad momentum chase.

Portfolio
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Regional Banks (KRE): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Industrials Sector (XLI): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Nvidia earnings and Jackson Hole/FOMC path could reverse growth and rate-sensitive factors within the scoring window
  • Further labor or CPI downside could extend industrial and bank underperformance rather than reverse it
  • Oil and dollar residual volatility may spill into beta and financials if energy keeps sliding
  • Crypto momentum failure would not directly hit top ranks but would raise overall risk-off correlation

Rationale

Near-high SPY plus September labor, CPI, and FOMC risk make broad beta the default. The only slate names with a fair one-month reversal case are the recent industrial/defense and utilities shocks; quality pullbacks are closer to SPY and crypto/solar lack independent support.

SPY is within 1.54% of its 52-week high after a modest 5-session dip while 21-session breadth is still broad. Soft July payrolls, cooling confidence, and a packed September data/FOMC calendar favor mixed mean-reversion in shocked cyclicals over chasing crypto or high-beta continuation.

Portfolio
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Utilities Sector (XLU): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • September 4 Employment Situation and September 15-16 FOMC/SEP can reprice rates and defensives quickly
  • August 26 Nvidia results can dominate semis and growth beta independently of sector reversals
  • Further crude weakness after the 3.6% Brent drop can spill into cyclicals
  • Crypto 20%+ 5-session spikes can reverse violently given 40-60% horizon vol
