Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 33,568 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v3.0 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic judgment without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to rank assets for realized return over exactly one week and identify candidates that can beat SPY. CapitalBench, not you, constructs the scored portfolio from your judgment using the fixed rule below.

The deterministic candidate slate exists to prevent omission; it is not a recommendation. Assess every slate candidate. You may add at most two wildcard options from the complete allowed universe, but only when the frozen briefing supplies a specific reason the mechanical slate missed.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, table order, and slate inclusion as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Do not extrapolate recent returns mechanically. A recent winner has no positive edge without independent in-window support. Give extreme recent losers a fair reversal test, but distinguish temporary price overreaction from fundamental deterioration. Use the supplied cross-sectional dispersion, medium-horizon relative strength, volatility, drawdown, volume, briefing evidence, and quality evidence. Optimize for the stated close-to-close scoring window only.

For every assessed candidate, provide probabilities and an 80% excess-return range relative to SPY. Rank every assessment without ties. top3_option_ids must be the options ranked 1, 2, and 3. prefer_spy is a diagnostic judgment and does not override the deterministic rule.

CapitalBench applies this rule after your response:

1. Preserve your candidate ranks.
2. A non-SPY candidate is eligible only when you label its recent return as overreaction and give it at least a 55% probability of beating SPY.
3. Select at most the first three eligible candidates in your rank order.
4. Fill fixed portfolio slots of 35%, 35%, and 30% in that order.
5. Put every unused slot in SPY.

You do not submit allocations or an alternative portfolio. Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

Favor high-quality pullbacks with intact prior relative uptrends: cybersecurity, software, and aerospace-defense combine top quality scores with sharp one-week underperformance in a risk-off week, giving reversal edge into the NVIDIA catalyst window. Avoid chasing crypto continuation given extreme vol and drawdown, and avoid solar's persistent deterioration.

SPY fell 1.96% over the week with VIX up to 16 and yields rising; dispersion is elevated (4.38%). High-quality tech/growth pullbacks (cybersecurity, software, defense) sit against a strong prior relative trend, with the NVIDIA earnings catalyst on Aug 26 inside the window offering a mean-reversion path if results support the AI trade. Crypto has extreme short-term continuation but poor quality and heavy 52w-high distance, arguing against chasing.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 60% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Software (IGV): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • NVIDIA earnings on Aug 26 could disappoint and extend the tech/growth selloff
  • Rising long-end yields (10y ~4.70%, 30y ~5.23%) pressure high-beta growth exposures
  • Hawkish FOMC minutes tone and sticky inflation prints (PCE Aug 26) could deepen risk-off
  • Persian Gulf oil disruption could push energy higher at the expense of the picked sectors

Rationale

Rank order favors high-quality prior-trend leaders that suffered a sharp one-week relative drawdown without evident fundamental damage: cybersecurity, aerospace/defense, and software all combine top-decile prior active return with steep recent relative pullbacks and shallow absolute drawdowns. These are the three labeled overreaction with >=55% odds. Crypto's recent surge is flow-driven with the weakest quality evidence and is not ranked as an overreaction. Semis and robotics are excluded from top slots because the NVIDIA print inside the window makes their distribution near-symmetric with very high beta.

Equities pulled back ~2% on the week with VIX up to 16 and 10y/30y yields rising to 4.70%/5.23%. Breadth was defensive: only 32% of assets positive over 5 sessions while commodities, gold, healthcare and energy led. NVIDIA's Aug 26 report plus the Aug 26 PCE print sit inside the scoring window, so high-beta AI/semi exposure carries two-sided event risk rather than clean edge. Quality-pullback names with strong prior trend (cybersecurity, aerospace/defense, software) show the best combination of prior relative strength and a sharp one-week relative drawdown, making them the most credible short-horizon reversal candidates.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Software (IGV): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • NVIDIA results on Aug 26 could drive a broad tech drawdown that hits cybersecurity, software, and robotics together
  • Aug 26 PCE and second GDP estimate could push the 10-year above 4.80% and compress high-multiple growth valuations
  • Reversal thesis may fail if the recent pullback marks the start of a sustained factor rotation out of tech-adjacent leaders
  • Concentration in correlated technology_and_growth exposures reduces diversification across the three slots
  • Persian Gulf shipping uncertainty and Brent near $94 could sustain a defensive, energy-led rotation away from selected names

Rationale

The portfolio targets a rebound in the technology sector, specifically semiconductors, driven by the upcoming NVIDIA earnings report. Software and Cybersecurity are included as high-quality tech sub-sectors that have experienced recent pullbacks but maintain strong prior trends.

The market is experiencing a pullback with the S&P 500 down 1.9% for the week, driven by rising yields and uncertainty around inflation and Fed policy. The upcoming NVIDIA earnings report is a major catalyst for the tech sector.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 65% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 30% - V3 selected model rank 4: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • NVIDIA earnings disappoint, leading to a broad sell-off in the technology sector.
  • Interest rates continue to rise, putting pressure on growth stock valuations.

Rationale

Cybersecurity, aerospace and defense, and software combine strong prior relative trends with abrupt pullbacks and high quality scores. Their reversal cases are more credible than the weak-trend solar and semiconductor declines or the overextended, low-quality crypto rallies.

High cross-sectional dispersion, weak near-term breadth, rising yields, and major inflation and NVIDIA event risk favor selective reversal trades over broad continuation. Strong prior trends followed by sharp relative pullbacks offer the clearest one-week opportunities.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 60% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Software (IGV): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Hot PCE or durable-goods data could push yields higher and extend growth-sector weakness.
  • NVIDIA results could trigger a broad technology selloff despite selective reversal signals.
  • A worsening Persian Gulf disruption could produce an oil and inflation shock that pressures equities.
  • The recent pullbacks may reflect a durable factor rotation rather than temporary overreaction.

Rationale

Crypto candidates show overreaction with sufficient p_beat_spy but high volatility limits top3 selection; benchmark fills remaining slots.

Equity pullbacks amid rising yields and mixed macro data, with crypto showing volume-driven strength but high reversal risk over one week.

Portfolio
  • Ethereum ETF (ETHA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Bitcoin ETF (IBIT): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • Crypto volatility exceeding one-week horizon
  • Rising Treasury yields pressuring risk assets
  • NVIDIA earnings and GDP revisions as near-term catalysts

Rationale

Highest-conviction names are quality pullbacks (CIBR, ITA, ARKQ) showing overreaction after strong priors; only these clear the overreaction-plus-55% bar. Semis carry NVIDIA binary risk without quality support; crypto extensions look exhausted. Prefer SPY fill for unused slots given mixed macro and modest dispersion.

SPY pulled back ~2% with VIX at 16 amid sticky inflation prints, rising yields near 4.7%, and soft retail/payroll data; quality tech/defense names show sharp relative pullbacks after strong priors while crypto extended hard on volume; NVIDIA print and PCE/GDP revisions dominate the one-week window, favoring selective mean-reversion over broad continuation.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 59% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Autonomous Technology and Robotics (ARKQ): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • NVIDIA earnings Aug 26 could drive broad tech/semiconductor volatility and spill into robotics/cyber
  • Sticky inflation and rising 10y yields near 4.7% may pressure duration-sensitive growth equities further
  • Geopolitical oil/tanker uncertainty and Brent near $94 could sustain risk-off if escalates
  • PCE/GDP revisions Aug 26 may reprice Fed path after July minutes flagged upside inflation risks

Rationale

The cleanest one-week edges are quality pullbacks in cybersecurity, aerospace/defense, and software after sharp relative drops from strong prior trends. High-beta semis and robotics face NVIDIA and rates event risk, solar looks like deterioration rather than a clean overshoot, and crypto already ran hard on volume. Prefer SPY as the default unless those labeled overreactions actually mean-revert.

SPY finished the week lower with VIX still modest at 16 while 5-session active-return dispersion is 4.38% and only about 32% of assets were positive. High-beta growth names sold off after prior strength, crypto extended a short bounce, and rates drifted higher into a data-heavy week including NVIDIA after the close on Aug 26.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 57% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Software (IGV): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • NVIDIA results after the Aug 26 close can extend semiconductor and high-beta tech weakness through the Friday exit.
  • Rising 10-year yields near 4.70% and hawkish July FOMC minutes can keep duration-sensitive growth from bouncing.
  • Brent near $94 and Gulf tanker uncertainty can rotate risk into energy rather than the pulled-back tech sleeves.
  • Aug 26 GDP/PCE and Aug 21 PMIs can reprice the whole equity complex inside the scoring window.
