Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 33,570 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v3.0 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic judgment without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to rank assets for realized return over exactly one month and identify candidates that can beat SPY. CapitalBench, not you, constructs the scored portfolio from your judgment using the fixed rule below.

The deterministic candidate slate exists to prevent omission; it is not a recommendation. Assess every slate candidate. You may add at most two wildcard options from the complete allowed universe, but only when the frozen briefing supplies a specific reason the mechanical slate missed.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, table order, and slate inclusion as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Do not extrapolate recent returns mechanically. A recent winner has no positive edge without independent in-window support. Give extreme recent losers a fair reversal test, but distinguish temporary price overreaction from fundamental deterioration. Use the supplied cross-sectional dispersion, medium-horizon relative strength, volatility, drawdown, volume, briefing evidence, and quality evidence. Optimize for the stated close-to-close scoring window only.

For every assessed candidate, provide probabilities and an 80% excess-return range relative to SPY. Rank every assessment without ties. top3_option_ids must be the options ranked 1, 2, and 3. prefer_spy is a diagnostic judgment and does not override the deterministic rule.

CapitalBench applies this rule after your response:

1. Preserve your candidate ranks.
2. A non-SPY candidate is eligible only when you label its recent return as overreaction and give it at least a 55% probability of beating SPY.
3. Select at most the first three eligible candidates in your rank order.
4. Fill fixed portfolio slots of 35%, 35%, and 30% in that order.
5. Put every unused slot in SPY.

You do not submit allocations or an alternative portfolio. Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

Favor quality-pullback names with strong prior relative trends: semis into the NVIDIA earnings catalyst, momentum factor after a modest give-back, and small value supported by breadth broadening and low jobless claims. Each pullback looks like corrective overreaction within intact trends rather than fundamental deterioration.

SPY pulled back -1.96% on the week as long yields rose and VIX jumped to 16. Prior strong trends (semis, momentum, tech) saw modest pullbacks into the NVIDIA Aug 26 earnings catalyst, while breadth (RSP outperforming SPY) and low jobless claims suggest a corrective dip rather than regime change. Quality-pullback names with strong prior trends look best over the month.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Momentum Equities (MTUM): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Small-Cap Value (IWN): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 55% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • NVIDIA earnings disappointment on Aug 26 could hit semis and momentum hard given 2.4x beta
  • Rising long yields (30y >5.2%) and hawkish FOMC minutes could pressure all risk assets into the Sep 16 FOMC
  • Persistent CPI (3.4% y/y) print on Sep 11 could reprice rate expectations
  • Oil supply disruption in Persian Gulf could spike inflation expectations and hurt equities

Rationale

Only the semiconductor complex offers a specific, dated in-window catalyst (NVIDIA Aug 26) paired with a deep relative pullback against the strongest prior relative trend in the universe, so SEMICONDUCTORS ranks first and TAIWAN second as the correlated but lower-volatility expression. SMALL_VALUE ranks third on quality evidence and improving breadth but is labeled no_edge, so the deterministic rule will leave that slot in SPY. Extreme recent winners (ETHA) and structurally weak names (TAN, EWZ, XLU) are declined.

A modest broad-market pullback (SPY -1.96% over the last window, VIX 16 from 14.9) sits against firm activity data (Philly Fed 47.4, claims 206k) but sticky inflation (CPI 3.4% y/y, PPI 4.7%) and rising long yields (10y 4.70%, 30y 5.23%). Breadth deteriorated short-term (31.9% positive over 5 sessions) but was broad over 21 sessions (79.7%). The key in-window catalysts are NVIDIA earnings on Aug 26 and the Sept 16 FOMC. Semis pulled back hard (-4.49%, -6.17% active) after a very strong prior trend (+33.3% prior active) with the highest quality-evidence score in the universe, making that the cleanest overreaction candidate ahead of a specific catalyst. Most other slate names are either momentum-chasing (ETHA), structurally impaired (TAN), or offer no reliable one-month edge.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 59% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Taiwan Equities (EWT): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • A disappointing NVIDIA report on Aug 26 could sharply reverse the semiconductor thesis given 53.6% horizon volatility and 2.36 SPY beta
  • Sticky inflation (CPI 3.4%, PPI 4.7%) plus hawkish FOMC dissents could push yields higher and compress high-beta growth multiples into the Sept 16 FOMC
  • Taiwan carries geopolitical and currency tail risk not visible in trailing data
  • Persian Gulf tanker disruption could spike oil and pressure risk assets broadly
  • Labor deterioration (payrolls -23k, downward revisions) could turn the pullback into a broader growth scare

Rationale

The portfolio targets the upcoming NVIDIA earnings catalyst via SEMICONDUCTORS, which has seen a recent pullback but has strong medium-term momentum. OIL is included due to geopolitical uncertainty in the Persian Gulf and recent price strength. ETHEREUM_ETF is selected for its strong short-term continuation momentum.

The market is experiencing a pullback with the S&P 500 down 1.9% over the past week. Yields have risen slightly, and the Fed minutes indicate a cautious approach to inflation. The upcoming NVIDIA earnings report is a significant catalyst for the tech sector.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 65% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 65% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • NVIDIA earnings disappoint, leading to a sharp selloff in SEMICONDUCTORS and the broader market.
  • Geopolitical tensions in the Persian Gulf ease, causing a reversal in OIL prices.
  • Inflation data comes in hotter than expected, leading to higher yields and a broader market pullback.

3 holdings US Dollar (UUP)
US Dollar (UUP) 35% Semiconductors (SMH) 35% US Momentum Equities (MTUM) 30%
Confidence
0.58
Run Type
official
Rationale

The ranking pairs a low-volatility dollar pullback with two higher-upside equity reversals. Semiconductors have the clearest scheduled catalyst, while momentum offers broader trend-recovery exposure; all three edges are modest enough to warrant wide ranges.

Large cross-asset return gaps, elevated candidate volatility, firm long yields, and multiple macro events favor selective pullback reversals and defensive exposure rather than broad continuation.

Portfolio
  • US Dollar (UUP): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 60% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Momentum Equities (MTUM): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • A benign CPI and dovish September FOMC outcome could weaken the dollar and revive broad SPY risk appetite.
  • NVIDIA results or guidance could disappoint and deepen the semiconductor pullback.
  • Persistently high inflation and rising long yields could pressure high-beta momentum and semiconductor holdings.
  • A rapid factor rotation could turn the momentum pullback into sustained fundamental underperformance.

Rationale

Rank quality pullback reversals in semis and momentum highest given extreme prior strength then sharp recent underperformance; small-value offers lower-vol mean-reversion; eligibility requires overreaction plus >=55% beat prob, else SPY fills slots amid macro uncertainty.

Recent equity pullback with elevated rates, sticky inflation signals, and oil strength creates mixed continuation/reversal setup; high cross-asset dispersion and quality pullbacks in semis/momentum favor selective mean-reversion over broad beta.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 35% - V3 selected model rank 1: overreaction with 62% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Momentum Equities (MTUM): 35% - V3 selected model rank 2: overreaction with 58% estimated probability of beating SPY.
  • US Small-Cap Value (IWN): 30% - V3 selected model rank 3: overreaction with 56% estimated probability of beating SPY.
Key Risks
  • Sticky inflation and FOMC minutes skewing toward possible further tightening into September meeting
  • Oil/geopolitical supply disruption sustaining higher yields and equity multiple compression
  • NVIDIA earnings Aug 26 could extend semis/tech drawdown rather than reverse it
  • High horizon vols in growth/factor names amplify one-month path risk

Rationale

The one-month window is dominated by FOMC, CPI, payrolls, and NVIDIA rather than a clean continuation or crash-reversal regime. Highest-quality, lower-beta pullbacks (small value, utilities) rank ahead of high-vol shock names; semis are a two-way catalyst, not a high-confidence SPY beater. No candidate is labeled overreaction with p_beat_spy >=55, so the deterministic rule should keep unused slots in SPY, which matches prefer_spy.

SPY sold off ~2% into higher 10y yields (~4.70%), VIX 16, sticky CPI/PCE, and a September FOMC with minutes leaning hawkish if inflation stays elevated. Equal-weight beat cap-weight on the 5s/21s windows while only ~32% of assets were positive on 5s, so the month is a mixed pullback-plus-event window rather than a clean trend. High-beta tech/semis remain prior-strong but recently weak; oil strength is supply/geopolitics rather than a broad risk-on tape.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 100% - Deterministic SPY fallback for V3 slots without an eligible active candidate.
Key Risks
  • September FOMC and sticky 3.4% CPI / 3.7% PCE could reprice duration and growth stocks together.
  • NVIDIA Aug 26 results can dominate semiconductor and momentum residuals.
  • Persian Gulf oil-flow uncertainty can spike energy vol while pressuring equities.
  • July payrolls -23k with downward revisions raise a growth-scare path for small caps if claims reverse higher.
