Prompt And Input Packet

Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 34,195 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v2.2 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic decision without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to allocate 100% across the allowed options to maximize expected realized portfolio return over the close-to-close one-week scoring window. The official comparison is the S&P 500 (SPY): alpha equals portfolio return minus SPY return. A 100% SPY portfolio is valid when no active option has a stronger base-case forecast.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, and table order as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Price history is descriptive, not a forecast. Test both continuation and reversal for every finalist. A recent winner needs independent support in the supplied briefing or an explicitly stated weak-evidence caveat. Optimize for the stated horizon only.

Complete the decision in this order:

1. Assess SPY and 5-7 additional finalists, for a total candidate ledger of 6-8 unique options.
2. Include SPY in the ledger and span at least four listed economic-exposure clusters.
3. Give every candidate a low, base, and high return forecast in percentage points, with low <= base <= high.
4. Record concise supplied evidence, the continuation case, reversal case, time-window catalyst, and invalidation condition for every candidate. Keep rejected finalists in the ledger.
5. Select only active holdings whose base forecast is greater than SPY's base forecast. CASH is not an active holding. If no active option clears that hurdle, use SPY and/or CASH.
6. Construct the final 1-5 holding portfolio in the stated allocation increments. Outside SPY and CASH, no economic-exposure cluster may exceed the round's stated maximum.
7. Set each holding's expected_return_pct equal to that candidate's base forecast. Calculate the weighted portfolio base return and expected alpha versus SPY.

Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

Core SPY plus value/inflation-tilted satellites: energy and gold hedge the elevated-inflation, geopolitical backdrop into CPI/PPI, while UK equities and US financials combine strong prior relative trends with recent pullbacks and supportive rate/oil fundamentals.

Barbell of benchmark core with inflation-sensitive (energy, gold) and value (UK, financials) exposures positioned for a data-heavy week with elevated inflation prints and Middle East supply risk.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 30% - Benchmark core with strong earnings season backdrop; anchors the portfolio through jobs/CPI data.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 20% - Brent at $82.49 with Strait of Hormuz risk premium; sector pulled back -4.98% vs SPY last week despite +6.54% prior trend, offering mean-reversion entry.
  • Gold (IAU): 20% - Elevated inflation (core PCE 3.3% y/y, ISM prices >70) plus geopolitical uncertainty; CPI/PPI prints in window support hedge demand.
  • United Kingdom Equities (EWU): 15% - Strong prior relative trend (+5.21%) with deep recent pullback (-4.40%); value/energy/dividend tilt benefits from firm oil and highest quality evidence score in universe (0.867).
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 15% - Best prior active trend among US sectors (+4.19%) with recent -2.20% pullback; solid growth, hawkish-tilted Fed, and steep 30y at 5.22% support bank margins.
Key Risks
  • Hot CPI/PPI prints could sink all risk assets including satellites
  • Middle East de-escalation would reverse oil and energy positioning
  • Weak July payrolls could trigger growth scare hurting financials and energy
  • Continued mega-cap tech leadership would leave value tilts lagging SPY

Rationale

Overweight the leading US growth/tech complex on strong earnings and positive breadth while anchoring half in SPY for diversification; tech cluster capped at 50%.

US equities carry strong earnings momentum; tilt to growth/tech for modest alpha while keeping SPY as core anchor.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 50% - Strong earnings season with best growth since 2021, solid GDP final sales, benign broad equity trend.
  • Technology Sector (XLK): 25% - Tech leading with strongest 3-session return, positive momentum in growth cluster and earnings strength.
  • US Large-Cap Growth (IWF): 25% - Large growth showed positive active return and leadership; complements SPY with growth tilt.
Key Risks
  • Hot July CPI/PPI reviving rate-hike fears and hitting high-beta growth
  • Broad risk-off from Middle East oil shock
  • Tech mean-reversion after recent leadership

Rationale

SPY core plus a diversified set of laggard-quality sectors (financials, healthcare), a moderate tech sleeve, and a gold hedge into a heavy inflation-data week.

After a +3.6% SPY week concentrated in mega-cap tech, mean reversion risk is elevated; the portfolio keeps benchmark beta while tilting to high-quality laggards and an inflation hedge ahead of CPI, PPI, and retail sales.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 40% - Core benchmark exposure with strong earnings breadth and momentum.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 25% - Best-in-class quality score with low volatility, positive prior active trend, and recent relative pullback offering catch-up potential.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 15% - Defensive sector, low beta and negative SPY correlation, lagged badly last week (-3.05% active) with solid quality rank.
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 10% - Tech exposure with less extreme volatility than semis; positive 5s active return and small drawdown.
  • Gold (IAU): 10% - Inflation hedge with elevated PCE readings and Middle East risk; diversifies equity beta.
Key Risks
  • Hot July CPI/PPI triggering a broad risk-off week
  • Continued mega-cap tech leadership leaving laggard tilts behind
  • Oil/Hormuz escalation shocking cyclicals and inflation expectations
  • Weak payrolls on Aug 7 driving a growth scare

Rationale

The portfolio tilts toward supplied high-quality pullback and commodity/geopolitical exposures whose base forecasts exceed SPY over the one-week window. Energy exposure is capped at 50%, with diversifiers in financials, metals/mining, and UK equities to reduce single-cluster dependence.

SPY has positive broad-market momentum and earnings support, but several active candidates have stronger one-week setups from high quality evidence, sharp pullbacks, and identifiable in-window macro or geopolitical catalysts. The expected portfolio base return is 0.965%, or 0.715 percentage points above SPY.

Portfolio
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 30% - Energy has the strongest supplied quality evidence among U.S. sectors, a large prior active trend, and a sharp recent relative pullback while oil-related geopolitical uncertainty remains in-window relevant.
  • Crude Oil (USO): 20% - Crude oil offers direct exposure to the supplied geopolitical oil-risk catalyst after a severe short-term drawdown, with the highest prior active return and pullback ranks but very high volatility.
  • Metals and Mining (XME): 15% - Metals and mining has recent absolute and relative strength, modest positive prior active return, and leverage to firm manufacturing and commodity demand data.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 20% - Financials combine high quality evidence, a strong prior active trend, low relative volatility, and support from solid activity and earnings context despite recent underperformance.
  • United Kingdom Equities (EWU): 15% - UK equities have the highest supplied quality evidence score, strong prior active return, low volatility, and a recent pullback that creates a one-week rebound setup.
Key Risks
  • The July employment, CPI, PPI, or retail-sales releases could trigger a broad risk-off move that hurts cyclical and commodity-sensitive holdings more than SPY.
  • Energy and oil positions could continue reversing lower if the Strait of Hormuz risk premium fades or demand expectations weaken.
  • Recent strength in metals/mining could be a short-term exhaustion move rather than continuation.
  • SPY mega-cap growth leadership could resume and outperform the diversified active tilts over the one-week horizon.

Rationale

The portfolio favors three distinct clusters with strong prior relative trends and recent pullbacks, while avoiding the weakest high-volatility momentum trades. Energy receives the cap allocation because geopolitical support complements its mechanical evidence.

Energy, financials, and UK equities each have base forecasts above SPY and offer differentiated exposure to inflation, yields, global value, and geopolitical developments during the scoring week.

Portfolio
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 50% - Strong prior relative trend and a deep recent pullback are reinforced by elevated crude prices and continuing Strait of Hormuz uncertainty.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 30% - Strong prior active performance, low recent volatility, and firm activity data support a rebound from recent underperformance.
  • United Kingdom Equities (EWU): 20% - The highest quality-evidence score combines strong prior relative performance, a deep pullback, and comparatively low volatility.
Key Risks
  • A benign CPI or PPI report could lower yields and reverse the energy and financials theses.
  • De-escalation around the Strait of Hormuz could sharply reduce crude prices and energy-sector returns.
  • Weak August 14 retail sales could undermine cyclical and financial exposures.
  • Recent pullbacks may represent trend deterioration rather than temporary dislocations.

Rationale

Selected only names with base forecasts strictly above SPY while respecting the 50% cluster cap; tilted to recent relative strength in tech/growth, energy, and gold amid elevated inflation and solid activity data.

SPY base set conservatively after strong 5-session run; active holdings chosen for higher expected one-week returns from momentum, commodities, and inflation hedges with catalysts inside the scoring window.

Portfolio
  • Technology Sector (XLK): 30% - Strong recent relative momentum and earnings backdrop support higher base return than SPY over the one-week window.
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 20% - Highest recent active return among growth names with quality pullback setup exceeding SPY base case.
  • Gold (IAU): 25% - Elevated inflation readings and Middle East uncertainty support precious-metals bid above SPY base.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 25% - High quality-evidence score, prior active strength, and oil price spike provide superior base forecast.
Key Risks
  • July employment and CPI surprises trigger broad equity risk-off
  • Geopolitical de-escalation reverses energy and gold bids
  • Tech/semiconductor mean-reversion after elevated recent gains
  • Cluster concentration amplifies sector-specific drawdowns
