Prompt And Input Packet

Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 34,258 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v2.2 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic decision without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to allocate 100% across the allowed options to maximize expected realized portfolio return over the close-to-close one-month scoring window. The official comparison is the S&P 500 (SPY): alpha equals portfolio return minus SPY return. A 100% SPY portfolio is valid when no active option has a stronger base-case forecast.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, and table order as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Price history is descriptive, not a forecast. Test both continuation and reversal for every finalist. A recent winner needs independent support in the supplied briefing or an explicitly stated weak-evidence caveat. Optimize for the stated horizon only.

Complete the decision in this order:

1. Assess SPY and 5-7 additional finalists, for a total candidate ledger of 6-8 unique options.
2. Include SPY in the ledger and span at least four listed economic-exposure clusters.
3. Give every candidate a low, base, and high return forecast in percentage points, with low <= base <= high.
4. Record concise supplied evidence, the continuation case, reversal case, time-window catalyst, and invalidation condition for every candidate. Keep rejected finalists in the ledger.
5. Select only active holdings whose base forecast is greater than SPY's base forecast. CASH is not an active holding. If no active option clears that hurdle, use SPY and/or CASH.
6. Construct the final 1-5 holding portfolio in the stated allocation increments. Outside SPY and CASH, no economic-exposure cluster may exceed the round's stated maximum.
7. Set each holding's expected_return_pct equal to that candidate's base forecast. Calculate the weighted portfolio base return and expected alpha versus SPY.

Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

Overweight the pulled-back leaders (semiconductors, momentum) supported by the strongest earnings growth since 2021 and expanding PMIs, add oversold utilities as a rate-sensitive rebound and hedge, and keep an SPY core.

Barbell of high-quality-evidence pullback candidates (SMH, MTUM, XLU) over a 20% SPY core, targeting ~0.8% alpha over the one-month window.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 30% - Strongest prior trend in universe (46% prior active return) with a recent pullback; strongest earnings season since 2021 supports AI-driven chip demand into September.
  • US Momentum Equities (MTUM): 25% - Top-decile prior trend with deep recent relative pullback (0.93 pullback rank), a favorable mean-reversion-plus-trend setup in a strong earnings tape.
  • Utilities Sector (XLU): 25% - Deepest recent relative pullback (0.955 rank) after a positive prior trend; stable rates and defensive rotation support a bounce.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 20% - Benchmark ballast: solid GDP, strong earnings season, expanding ISM readings.
Key Risks
  • Hot July CPI (Aug 12) or hawkish Jackson Hole lifting yields, hurting both growth and utilities
  • Semiconductor momentum reversal given 55% annualized volatility and 2.4 beta
  • Momentum factor crowding unwind extending the recent -5.2% active drawdown
  • Middle East/Strait of Hormuz escalation lifting oil and inflation expectations

Rationale

Core SPY plus a moderate tech-growth and financials tilt aiming to capture strong earnings momentum and stable macro while capping any single cluster at 50%.

Overweight quality US equity with SOFTWARE and FINANCIALS tilts that clear the SPY hurdle on recent relative strength and shallow drawdowns.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 50% - Broad large-cap core with strongest earnings season since 2021 and solid GDP/services activity backdrop.
  • Software (IGV): 25% - Strong recent 21s active return (+4.4%) with deep prior pullback, leadership in AI/tech with room to run vs stretched semis.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 25% - Positive active 21s return (+2.06%), shallowest drawdown, strong quality drawdown rank amid solid economy and elevated rates.
Key Risks
  • Hotter July CPI on Aug 12 triggering equity/rate shock
  • AI/tech growth rotation reversing SOFTWARE gains
  • Financials hit by yield-curve flattening or credit stress

Rationale

Keep a large SPY core given strong earnings breadth and solid ISM, then add modest tilts to financials (curve steepness, shallow drawdown), cybersecurity (durable trend, near highs), defense (geopolitical premium) and equal weight for breadth.

Mildly constructive one-month view on US equities with diversified, moderate-beta tilts rather than crowded semiconductor/momentum exposure that carries very high volatility and deep drawdowns.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 40% - Core benchmark exposure with strong earnings season and solid activity data.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 20% - Positive 21-day active return, lowest drawdown among sectors, steep curve (30y 5.22% vs 2y 4.25%) supports margins.
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 20% - Strong prior active trend (+28.9%) with positive recent active return and only -1.6% from 52-week high; less crowded than semis.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 10% - Positive recent active return, near 52-week high, geopolitical risk premium from Middle East conflict cited by the Fed.
  • Equal-Weight S&P 500 (RSP): 10% - Low volatility and shallow drawdown breadth exposure; hedges mega-cap concentration risk.
Key Risks
  • July CPI/PPI surprise on the upside given 5.1% Q2 PCE inflation, pressuring multiples
  • Hawkish Jackson Hole or FOMC minutes with three voters already favoring a hike
  • Momentum/growth unwind hitting cybersecurity and high-beta tilts
  • Middle East escalation spiking oil and hurting cyclicals
  • Weak July payrolls released hours after entry

Rationale

The portfolio tilts toward candidates with base forecasts above SPY, combining technology-growth continuation with industrial, financial, and commodity exposures. Technology-and-growth exposure is capped at 50%, while the rest diversifies across defense, financials, and copper-sensitive cyclicals.

SPY has supportive earnings and activity data but already strong near-term gains. The selected basket seeks one-month alpha from high-quality relative trend plus identifiable macro and earnings catalysts, while respecting the cluster cap.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 30% - Highest quality evidence score among major high-beta growth candidates, with very strong prior active trend and deep recent pullback; positioned for continuation if earnings-led risk appetite persists.
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 20% - Positive recent and prior active returns with smaller drawdown than semiconductors; offers technology-growth exposure with less extreme beta than the most volatile AI-linked funds.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 20% - Recent price strength and positive 21-day active return combine with geopolitical uncertainty cited in the briefing, while avoiding the technology cluster cap.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 15% - Financials show positive 21-day active return, shallow drawdown, and potential support from firm activity data and a high-rate environment.
  • Copper (CPER): 15% - Copper has strong recent active return and near-52-week-high positioning, supported by expanding manufacturing and services survey activity.
Key Risks
  • A hotter CPI/PPI or hawkish Fed communication could pressure high-beta technology and cyclical exposures.
  • The unreleased July and August employment reports could trigger a growth scare or rate shock before exit.
  • Recent winners could reverse sharply because several selected holdings have elevated volatility and drawdowns.
  • Geopolitical or commodity headlines could move oil, rates, and risk appetite in ways that undermine copper and defense exposure.

3 holdings Cybersecurity (CIBR)
Cybersecurity (CIBR) 40% Biotechnology (XBI) 30% Aerospace and Defense (ITA) 30%
Confidence

Run Type

Rationale

The portfolio combines cybersecurity trend persistence, biotech pullback recovery, and aerospace-defense geopolitical support across three capped exposure clusters. Each holding has a base forecast above SPY while avoiding concentration in the most volatile single theme.

Relative-strength and pullback evidence favor a diversified active-equity portfolio over SPY, but the edge is modest because inflation, rates, and labor releases can rapidly reverse risk appetite.

Portfolio
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 40% - Strong prior and recent benchmark-relative performance, proximity to its 52-week high, and lower volatility than several other technology themes support continued relative strength.
  • Biotechnology (XBI): 30% - The highest quality evidence score in the universe combines strong prior relative performance with a deep recent pullback, creating a supported mean-reversion opportunity.
  • Aerospace and Defense (ITA): 30% - Positive one-month active performance, strong recent gains, and geopolitical uncertainty provide a distinct industrial and defense catalyst despite weaker prior trend.
Key Risks
  • Hot CPI or PPI data could lift already-high Treasury yields and pressure growth and biotech valuations.
  • Weak employment, retail-sales, or GDP revisions could undermine the solid-activity and earnings backdrop.
  • A broad momentum reversal could disproportionately hurt cybersecurity and biotech.
  • Middle East de-escalation could remove the near-term support for aerospace-defense exposure.

4 holdings Semiconductors (SMH)
Semiconductors (SMH) 30% Biotechnology (XBI) 25% Taiwan Equities (EWT) 25% Cybersecurity (CIBR) 20%
Confidence
0.58
Run Type
official
Rationale

Portfolio concentrates in highest-quality-score names with base forecasts above SPY while respecting 50% cluster caps; tech-and-growth at 50%, healthcare and international each under 50%. Weighted base exceeds SPY on continuation of earnings strength and ISM expansion.

SPY base set modestly positive on solid GDP final sales, strong ISM, and earnings; selected higher-beta quality leaders in semis, biotech, Taiwan, and cyber for alpha. Caps and hurdle rules enforced; no pure momentum or low-quality laggards.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 30% - Highest quality score with extreme prior active trend and pullback support plus strong earnings backdrop favors outperformance vs broad market over one month.
  • Biotechnology (XBI): 25% - Top quality-evidence score driven by deep recent pullback after strong prior trend supports mean-reversion plus risk-on continuation.
  • Taiwan Equities (EWT): 25% - Very high quality score, semiconductor linkage, and recent relative strength after pullback position it above SPY base case.
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 20% - Strong prior active return and solid quality metrics with lower drawdown than pure semis support elevated base forecast.
Key Risks
  • Elevated PCE and ISM prices indices could trigger hawkish Fed minutes or Jackson Hole surprise
  • Middle East/oil spike renewing inflation and risk-off
  • High vol and distance-to-high in selected tech names amplify drawdown risk
  • July employment or CPI miss shifting rate path
