Prompt And Input Packet

Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 34,736 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v2.2 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic decision without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to allocate 100% across the allowed options to maximize expected realized portfolio return over the close-to-close one-month scoring window. The official comparison is the S&P 500 (SPY): alpha equals portfolio return minus SPY return. A 100% SPY portfolio is valid when no active option has a stronger base-case forecast.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, and table order as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Price history is descriptive, not a forecast. Test both continuation and reversal for every finalist. A recent winner needs independent support in the supplied briefing or an explicitly stated weak-evidence caveat. Optimize for the stated horizon only.

Complete the decision in this order:

1. Assess SPY and 5-7 additional finalists, for a total candidate ledger of 6-8 unique options.
2. Include SPY in the ledger and span at least four listed economic-exposure clusters.
3. Give every candidate a low, base, and high return forecast in percentage points, with low <= base <= high.
4. Record concise supplied evidence, the continuation case, reversal case, time-window catalyst, and invalidation condition for every candidate. Keep rejected finalists in the ledger.
5. Select only active holdings whose base forecast is greater than SPY's base forecast. CASH is not an active holding. If no active option clears that hurdle, use SPY and/or CASH.
6. Construct the final 1-5 holding portfolio in the stated allocation increments. Outside SPY and CASH, no economic-exposure cluster may exceed the round's stated maximum.
7. Set each holding's expected_return_pct equal to that candidate's base forecast. Calculate the weighted portfolio base return and expected alpha versus SPY.

Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Research cutoff: 2026-08-06T03:31:12Z. Decision date: August 5, 2026. Weekly scoring window: August 5-August 12. Monthly scoring window: August 5-September 4.

This briefing provides fixed factual datapoints only. It does not rank, recommend, analyze, or map facts to CapitalBench options. Inclusion, order, grouping, and row count are not evidence of expected return. A mechanical full-universe price, risk, and benchmark-relative appendix follows this briefing in the model input.

- On August 5 the S&P 500 closed at 7,723.55, down 0.2%; the Dow closed at a record 54,349.12, up 0.5%; and the Nasdaq Composite closed at 26,363.44, down 0.8%.
- Brent crude was reported at $79.45 a barrel, down 0.1% that day. It had reached $102 during the conflict.
- Treasury's August 5 par yields were 4.03% at one year, 4.18% at two years, 4.33% at five years, 4.63% at ten years, and 5.17% at thirty years. Treasury describes these as interpolated indicative yields observed near 3:30 p.m. ET.
- Treasury announced $125 billion of August refunding securities: $58 billion at three years, $42 billion at ten years, and $25 billion at thirty years. Auctions are scheduled for August 11, 12, and 13, with August 17 settlement.
- The refunding is expected to retire about $96.3 billion of privately held securities and raise about $28.7 billion of new cash. Treasury said it expects nominal coupon and floating-rate note auction sizes to remain unchanged for at least the next several quarters.

## U.S. policy, growth, inflation, and labor

- In June, personal income and disposable income each rose 0.2%, nominal spending rose 0.3%, real spending rose 0.4%, and the saving rate was 2.7%. Headline PCE prices fell 0.1% on the month and rose 3.7% over the year; core PCE rose 0.1% and 3.3%.

- The IEA reported June global oil supply at 98.8 million barrels per day, 9.4 million below prewar levels. Gulf exports including bypass routes were 16.1 million barrels per day, compared with a 24 million prewar average. The outlook depends on de-escalation and recovering tanker traffic.

# CapitalBench Fixed-Fact Briefing

Research cutoff: 2026-08-06T03:31:12Z. Decision date: August 5, 2026. Weekly scoring window: August 5-August 12. Monthly scoring window: August 5-September 4.

This briefing provides fixed factual datapoints only. It does not rank, recommend, analyze, or map facts to CapitalBench options. Inclusion, order, grouping, and row count are not evidence of expected return. A mechanical full-universe price, risk, and benchmark-relative appendix follows this briefing in the model input.

## Market close, rates, and Treasury financing

- On July 29 the FOMC maintained the federal-funds target at 3.50%-3.75% by a 9-3 vote. Three members preferred a 25-basis-point increase. The statement said inflation remained elevated relative to 2%.
- The advance estimate of annualized Q2 real GDP growth was 1.5%. Real final sales to private domestic purchasers rose 3.9%. The gross-domestic-purchases price index increased 5.7%; headline and core PCE prices rose at 5.1% and 3.4% annual rates. A second estimate is scheduled for August 26.
- June CPI fell 0.4% from May and rose 3.5% over twelve months. Core CPI was unchanged on the month and rose 2.6% over the year.
- June final-demand PPI fell 0.3% from May and rose 5.5% over twelve months. Goods prices declined 1.4% and services prices rose 0.2%. June data are preliminary.
- BLS reported 57,000 additional payroll jobs in June and unemployment at 4.2%, describing both as little changed.
- June job openings were little changed at 7.4 million. Hires were 5.3 million, total separations 5.4 million, quits 3.2 million, and layoffs and discharges 1.8 million.
- ADP estimated that private employers added 44,000 jobs in July, down from 95,000 in June. Reported year-over-year pay growth was 4.4% for job stayers and 7.0% for job changers. ADP is separate from the BLS payroll report.

## Business activity, consumers, housing, and trade

- The July ISM Manufacturing PMI was 55.6, up from 53.3 and the highest since May 2022. New orders were 56.7 and production was 58.5.
- The July ISM Services PMI was 54.1, compared with 54.0 in June. Business activity was 59.1, new orders 57.2, employment 47.4, and prices 70.3.
- June industrial production increased 0.1% and was 1.1% above a year earlier. Manufacturing output was unchanged. Capacity utilization was 76.1%, 3.3 percentage points below its 1972-2025 average. June data are preliminary.
- Advance June retail and food-services sales were $768.6 billion, up 0.2% on the month and 6.7% on the year. The monthly change was not statistically different from zero at 90% confidence, and the values are not price-adjusted.
- June housing starts were at a 1.427 million annual rate, 19.0% above revised May. Single-family starts were 895,000, down 0.2%. Permits were at a 1.367 million rate, down 3.0%. Sampling intervals were wide.
- July Consumer Confidence declined 1.4 points to 90.8. The Present Situation Index was 114.9 and the Expectations Index was 74.7. The preliminary online survey ended July 22.
- The June goods-and-services trade deficit narrowed to $73.3 billion. Exports were $314.7 billion and imports were $388.0 billion. The first-half deficit was 33.8% below the same 2025 period.

## Global, energy, geopolitical, and corporate facts

- The IMF's July forecast put global growth at 3.0% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027 and stated that global disinflation had stalled. These values are forecasts.
- On July 23 the ECB kept its deposit, main-refinancing, and marginal-lending rates at 2.25%, 2.40%, and 2.65%. It said the full inflationary effect of the energy shock had not yet played out.
- On August 5, Iranian and Omani negotiators were reported to have completed a draft Strait of Hormuz arrangement that still lacked final Iranian approval. Port-blockade relief, control, and service-fee terms remained disputed.
- About three quarters of S&P 500 companies had reported. Wall Street's aggregate profit-growth estimate for the completed season was reported at 50%; that estimate does not describe every company.
- On August 5, Disney rose 3.6%, Booking Holdings rose 6.6%, SpaceX fell 13.6%, Nvidia rose 3.4%, and AMD fell 7% following company-specific earnings or supplier news.

## Final neutrality statement

These are fixed, dated datapoints and scheduled statuses available by the cutoff. Rationale

Tilt toward AI/semiconductor leadership with independently supported earnings momentum, plus pulled-back biotech and Taiwan for mean-reversion carry, anchored by a small SPY position. Tech cluster capped at exactly 50%.

Overweight semiconductors/software on AI earnings strength and disinflation trajectory, add biotech and Taiwan with high quality-evidence scores, keep 10% SPY as ballast.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 25% - Strongest prior trend (37% prior active return, top quality score 0.738) with AI earnings momentum (Nvidia +3.4% on earnings); reported 50% aggregate S&P profit growth supports the AI capex cycle.
  • Software (IGV): 25% - Positive recent active return (+4.67% 21s) with deep prior pullback offering mean-reversion entry; benefits from same disinflation/rate path as growth.
  • Taiwan Equities (EWT): 20% - Top prior active rank (1.00) on semiconductor supply-chain strength; dollar weakness (UUP -1.09% 21s) supports non-US equity returns.
  • Biotechnology (XBI): 20% - Highest quality evidence score (0.785): strong prior trend (+19.5% prior active) with deep recent pullback (-9.58% 21s active), a favorable buy-the-dip setup; benefits from any rate relief.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 10% - Benchmark ballast near record levels with strong ISM (55.6) and record Dow close.
Key Risks
  • Hot July/August CPI (services prices at 70.3 ISM) triggers Fed hike pricing and growth-stock derating
  • High beta (~1.6 blended) means any broad selloff produces sizable negative alpha
  • Hormuz deal collapse spikes oil and inflation expectations
  • Semiconductor concentration: single-sector guidance disappointment hits three holdings simultaneously

Rationale

Overweight broad large-cap plus tech leadership and cyclical industrials leveraged to strong manufacturing PMI, while capping any non-benchmark cluster at or below 50%.

Tilt toward US equity with tech and industrials overweights supported by strong ISM data and earnings momentum; SPY anchors the book.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 50% - Strong recent momentum, robust earnings season (~50% aggregate profit growth reported), and healthy ISM readings support broad large-cap equity.
  • Technology Sector (XLK): 30% - Positive active return over 21 sessions, strong prior trend, and AI/semiconductor tailwinds; XLK has led with strong new-order manufacturing backdrop.
  • Industrials Sector (XLI): 20% - ISM Manufacturing PMI at 55.6, highest since May 2022, with strong new orders and production supports industrials cyclicals.
Key Risks
  • Hot July CPI (Aug 12) or PPI (Aug 13) reviving rate-hike fears given 3 FOMC dissenters
  • Weak Sep 4 jobs report signaling labor deterioration
  • Tech high beta and elevated volatility amplifying drawdowns

Run Type

Rationale

Equity-tilted with a benchmark core plus lower-volatility, positively-carrying diversifiers that have recently lagged the cap-weighted index, avoiding stretched high-beta semis and Korea/Taiwan exposure into a heavy macro calendar.

Hold SPY as the anchor and add healthcare, financials and equal-weight for mean-reversion of a very narrow five-session mega-cap advance, while capping any non-benchmark cluster at 40%.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 40% - Core benchmark exposure with strong earnings season and record Dow.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 20% - Defensive sector with high quality evidence score, recent underperformance, low beta and shallow drawdown.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 20% - At 52-week high with low volatility and smallest drawdown; steep curve (5.17% 30y vs 3.50-3.75% funds) supports margins.
  • Equal-Weight S&P 500 (RSP): 20% - Breadth catch-up after RSP lagged SPY by 3.67% in five sessions; lowest volatility broad equity sleeve.
Key Risks
  • Sticky inflation (core PCE 3.3%, PPI 5.5% y/y) with three FOMC hawkish dissents could lift yields and hit equities
  • Continued mega-cap/AI leadership would leave equal-weight and defensive tilts trailing SPY
  • Weak Sep 4 payrolls after 57k June and 44k ADP July could trigger a growth scare
  • Hormuz arrangement failure could re-spike oil and pressure margins
  • Heavy August Treasury refunding supply pressuring long-end yields and rate-sensitive equities

Run Type

Rationale

The portfolio balances growth and defensive exposures, overweighting technology and industrials based on strong momentum and manufacturing data. Gold and healthcare provide defensive ballast against geopolitical and macroeconomic uncertainties. This allocation aims to capture upside while managing downside risk over the one-month horizon.

A balanced approach favoring technology and industrials for growth, with gold and healthcare for defense.

Portfolio
  • Technology Sector (XLK): 30% - Strong recent momentum and high quality evidence score support continued outperformance.
  • Industrials Sector (XLI): 30% - Supported by strong ISM Manufacturing PMI data and solid quality evidence.
  • Gold (IAU): 20% - Provides a hedge against geopolitical risks and potential inflation persistence.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 20% - Defensive characteristics with a strong quality evidence score and recent pullback.
Key Risks
  • Higher-than-expected inflation data could trigger a sell-off in growth sectors like technology.
  • Geopolitical de-escalation could reduce the safe-haven appeal of gold.
  • A sudden deterioration in macroeconomic data could negatively impact industrials.

Rationale

The portfolio targets candidates with base forecasts above SPY, emphasizing supplied quality evidence, prior relative strength, and recent pullback/rebound setups. Technology-and-growth exposure is capped at 40%, with healthcare, international equity, and financials diversifying the active risk.

SPY is forecast at a modest positive base return, but selected active candidates have stronger one-month base cases from quality ranks and relative trend/pullback evidence. The allocation balances upside from semiconductors, Taiwan, cybersecurity, and biotech with a smaller financials position.

Portfolio
  • Biotechnology (XBI): 30% - Highest quality evidence score among the assessed candidates, with a strong prior active trend and a deep recent relative pullback that can rebound if risk appetite remains firm.
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 25% - Very strong prior active return and high quality score support continuation, while the recent pullback provides potential rebound fuel into the one-month window.
  • Taiwan Equities (EWT): 20% - Taiwan has the top prior active rank in the quality table and strong semiconductor-linked momentum, offering differentiated international tech exposure within the cluster cap.
  • Cybersecurity (CIBR): 15% - Cybersecurity combines positive 21-day active return, strong prior active return, and a shallow distance from its 52-week high relative to other growth options.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 10% - Financials provide non-technology cyclical exposure with positive recent active return, a new 52-week high, and lower volatility than most high-beta selections.
Key Risks
  • A hotter July CPI/PPI or employment report could lift rate expectations and pressure high-beta growth, biotech, and semiconductor exposures.
  • Recent high-volatility winners such as semiconductors and Taiwan could mean-revert sharply over a one-month horizon.
  • Geopolitical or supply-chain stress could hurt Taiwan and semiconductor-linked holdings despite strong prior momentum.
  • If market leadership broadens defensively or rotates to cash-like assets, the portfolio may underperform SPY's large-cap benchmark composition.

Semiconductors (SMH) 50% Biotechnology (XBI) 50%

Rationale

The portfolio combines the strongest quality-ranked pullback candidate with a high-quality technology trend candidate. Formal exposure is split evenly between technology-and-growth and healthcare-and-biotech, keeping each non-benchmark cluster at the 50% cap.

Semiconductors offer trend continuation backed by manufacturing and earnings evidence, while biotech offers a contrarian rebound setup. Both base forecasts exceed SPY's forecast for the one-month window.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 50% - Strong prior benchmark-relative trend and a high quality-evidence score support continuation after a relative pullback, while manufacturing strength and aggregate earnings growth provide independent support.
  • Biotechnology (XBI): 50% - The highest quality-evidence score and a deep recent relative pullback create a rebound setup that complements semiconductor exposure, though sector-specific fundamental evidence is limited.
Key Risks
  • Higher-than-expected CPI, PPI, or PCE data could lift yields and compress high-duration equity valuations.
  • Semiconductor gains could reverse after the 12.99% five-session advance and amid 55.95% annualized volatility.
  • Biotech's rebound thesis relies mainly on mechanical quality and pullback evidence rather than a supplied sector-specific catalyst.
  • Weak payroll, consumer, or GDP data could trigger a broad risk-off move before September 4.

Semiconductors (SMH) 30% Biotechnology (XBI) 25% Taiwan Equities (EWT) 20% S&P 500 (SPY) 25%
Confidence
0.58
Run Type

Rationale

Portfolio overweight high-quality momentum and pullback names in semiconductors, biotech, and Taiwan that clear the SPY base hurdle while capping technology_and_growth and international clusters under 50% and retaining SPY ballast. Expected alpha derives from superior base forecasts on selected actives versus the 1.6% SPY benchmark.

Selected holdings combine top quality-evidence scores, strong prior active trends, and recent pullbacks with one-month catalysts from data and earnings residual. Cluster limits and SPY inclusion control concentration while targeting positive alpha.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 30% - Highest prior active trend and quality score with AI/earnings momentum support for outperformance vs broad market over one month.
  • Biotechnology (XBI): 25% - Top quality evidence score with deep recent pullback rank supporting mean-reversion plus momentum continuation into the scoring window.
  • Taiwan Equities (EWT): 20% - Strongest prior active return and high quality score tied to semiconductor supply chain exposure exceeding SPY base case.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 25% - Core benchmark holding for diversification while active sleeves target higher base forecasts.
Key Risks
  • Sticky inflation and hawkish Fed residual from July FOMC could pressure growth equities
  • High volatility in semiconductors and Taiwan could reverse recent gains sharply
  • Geopolitical developments around energy or Asia trade disrupting international sleeves
  • Broad market concentration unwind if equal-weight or value factors rotate strongly
