Prompt And Input Packet

Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 33,155 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v2.2 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic decision without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to allocate 100% across the allowed options to maximize expected realized portfolio return over the close-to-close one-month scoring window. The official comparison is the S&P 500 (SPY): alpha equals portfolio return minus SPY return. A 100% SPY portfolio is valid when no active option has a stronger base-case forecast.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, and table order as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Price history is descriptive, not a forecast. Test both continuation and reversal for every finalist. A recent winner needs independent support in the supplied briefing or an explicitly stated weak-evidence caveat. Optimize for the stated horizon only.

Complete the decision in this order:

1. Assess SPY and 5-7 additional finalists, for a total candidate ledger of 6-8 unique options.
2. Include SPY in the ledger and span at least four listed economic-exposure clusters.
3. Give every candidate a low, base, and high return forecast in percentage points, with low <= base <= high.
4. Record concise supplied evidence, the continuation case, reversal case, time-window catalyst, and invalidation condition for every candidate. Keep rejected finalists in the ledger.
5. Select only active holdings whose base forecast is greater than SPY's base forecast. CASH is not an active holding. If no active option clears that hurdle, use SPY and/or CASH.
6. Construct the final 1-5 holding portfolio in the stated allocation increments. Outside SPY and CASH, no economic-exposure cluster may exceed the round's stated maximum.
7. Set each holding's expected_return_pct equal to that candidate's base forecast. Calculate the weighted portfolio base return and expected alpha versus SPY.

Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

With headline CPI at 3.5%, a 38% priced probability of a Fed hike, Brent near $97 and tariffs raising inflation risk, I tilt toward value, dividends, defensives, energy and commodities and away from richly-valued rate-sensitive growth.

Energy-shock plus hawkish-Fed regime favors low-beta value/defensive equity and commodity exposure over the growth-heavy S&P 500 for this one-month window.

Portfolio
  • US Large-Cap Value (IWD): 30% - Value leads in a rising-rate, energy-shock regime; +2.23% 21d active return, only -0.49% from 52w high, low vol.
  • US Dividend Equities (SCHD): 20% - Defensive dividend equity at 52w high with +4.17% 21d active return and very low beta (0.27) into hike risk.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 20% - Brent ~$97 amid Iran war supply shock; XLE +10.5% 21d active, negative SPY beta gives hedge value.
  • Broad Commodities (PDBC): 15% - Broad inflation hedge: +12.98% 21d active, tariffs and energy shock support commodity prices; negative equity beta.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 15% - Defensive sector turning: +5.24% 21d active after prolonged underperformance, low beta 0.32, near 52w high.
Key Risks
  • Oil price collapse on Iran de-escalation would hurt energy and commodity sleeves
  • A dovish FOMC and soft July CPI could spark a growth rally that the portfolio underweights
  • A Fed hike triggering a broad equity selloff would drag all equity sleeves despite defensive tilt
  • Tariff-driven earnings warnings during Aug reporting could hit value cyclicals

Rationale

Blend of SPY core with defensive/quality tilts (healthcare, financials, dividend) that showed positive recent active returns, low volatility and shallow drawdowns amid FOMC and tariff uncertainty.

Tilt toward defensively resilient sectors with positive active momentum while keeping broad SPY core; hedges tariff and rate risk during a heavy earnings and data window.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 40% - Core broad equity exposure with strong Q2 earnings tracking +26.5% YoY supporting large-cap resilience.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 25% - Defensive leadership with +5.24% active 21s return, low drawdown -3.74%, and shallow pullback offering value after prior underperformance.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 20% - Positive +4.05% active 21s return, low vol 13% and shallow drawdown -2.42%; strong earnings backdrop.
  • US Dividend Equities (SCHD): 15% - Strong +4.17% active 21s return, recent +1.15% strength, low beta 0.27, at 52w high with low drawdown.
Key Risks
  • FOMC surprise hike July 28-29 with 38% implied probability hurts rate-sensitive holdings
  • Mega-cap earnings disappointment drags broad market and correlates holdings
  • Tariff round announced July 24 raises inflation pass-through risk

Rationale

Barbell of benchmark core plus defensive/value and an energy hedge against the inflationary oil shock, avoiding stretched high-beta semis and AI names that already show sharp recent relative drawdowns.

Sticky 3.5% CPI, a live 38% July hike probability, tariff risk and negative tech breadth argue for lower-beta defensive and real-asset tilts around an SPY core.

Portfolio
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 35% - Core benchmark exposure with Q2 earnings tracking +26.5% y/y.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 20% - Defensive sector with positive relative momentum, low drawdown and tariff/rate insulation.
  • US Dividend Equities (SCHD): 20% - Strong relative trend, at 52-week high, low beta cushions mega-cap tech drawdown risk.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 15% - Oil near $97 on Iran-war supply shock supports energy cash flows; low correlation to SPY.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 10% - Positive 21-day active return, shallow drawdown, benefits from higher-for-longer rates.
Key Risks
  • Dovish FOMC sparks a mega-cap tech melt-up that leaves defensive tilts behind
  • Sharp oil reversal hits energy allocation
  • Tariff pass-through crushes consumer and broad equity sentiment
  • Hot July CPI on Aug 12 raises rates and pressures all equity clusters

Rationale

The portfolio tilts away from mega-cap growth toward dividend/value, healthcare, utilities, and energy where supplied evidence shows stronger recent breadth, lower drawdowns in several holdings, and identifiable one-month catalysts. It keeps diversified US equity exposure below the non-benchmark cluster cap and avoids concentrated high-volatility technology despite high quality-evidence ranks there.

SPY has decent earnings support but faces tariff, rate, and growth-data risks. Selected holdings have base forecasts above SPY and diversify across four non-benchmark clusters with catalysts inside the scoring window.

Portfolio
  • US Dividend Equities (SCHD): 30% - Dividend equities show strong recent relative performance, low beta, shallow drawdown, and exposure to profitable mature companies ahead of a heavy earnings window.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 20% - Healthcare combines strong 21-day active return and moderate beta with defensive characteristics if macro or tariff uncertainty weighs on broad risk appetite.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 20% - Energy has direct support from elevated crude prices after the Iran-war shock, strong recent active return, and possible earnings/geopolitical catalysts, while using sector equity rather than the more volatile oil ETP.
  • US Large-Cap Value (IWD): 15% - Large value has positive prior and recent active performance, lower volatility, low drawdown, and is near its 52-week high, fitting a one-month broadening and earnings-quality thesis.
  • Utilities Sector (XLU): 15% - Utilities provide rate-sensitive defensive exposure with positive recent and prior active returns, useful if labor or tariff uncertainty pressures cyclicals.
Key Risks
  • A dovish risk-on rally led by mega-cap technology could cause SPY to outperform the defensive/value tilt.
  • Oil and energy equities could reverse if crude prices fall after the geopolitical shock premium fades.
  • A hotter July CPI/PPI or hawkish FOMC message could pressure utilities and dividend/value equities through higher yields.
  • Earnings disappointments in selected defensive, value, or energy sectors could overwhelm recent relative-strength signals.

Rationale

The portfolio combines a high-upside semiconductor rebound with dividend and healthcare defensiveness and an energy inflation hedge. Each active holding has a base forecast above SPY, and no non-benchmark exposure cluster exceeds 50%.

Strong aggregate earnings and semiconductor pullback potential support upside, while broader participation and elevated energy prices favor dividend and energy exposure. Defensive healthcare reduces dependence on a single continuation regime.

Portfolio
  • Semiconductors (SMH): 45% - Exceptional prior relative strength and a deep recent pullback create the strongest rebound setup, supported by the imminent mega-cap earnings cycle, though volatility warrants staying below the cluster cap.
  • US Dividend Equities (SCHD): 30% - Positive short- and medium-term relative performance, lower volatility, and a defensive profile provide exposure to broadening market participation.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 15% - Energy equities retain support from elevated crude prices and strong relative performance, while the smaller allocation accounts for oil's sharp extension and reversal risk.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 10% - Recent benchmark-relative strength and defensive demand may persist if tariffs, softer employment, or policy uncertainty pressure cyclical equities.
Key Risks
  • A hawkish FOMC decision or renewed rise in Treasury yields could deepen the technology selloff.
  • Tariff pass-through could lift inflation while weakening corporate margins and consumer demand.
  • Crude oil could continue its July 24 reversal, sharply reducing energy-sector returns.
  • Mega-cap technology earnings could disappoint after the semiconductor group's extreme prior advance.

Rationale

Portfolio concentrates in energy/commodities capturing the dominant recent geopolitical and price momentum while diversifying into value and healthcare for lower-volatility alpha. All active holdings clear the SPY base hurdle and respect the 50% cluster cap.

Energy complex leads on supplied price and macro facts; value and healthcare add breadth across clusters with superior recent active returns and quality metrics versus growth-heavy benchmarks.

Portfolio
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 30% - Oil price persistence and energy sector momentum from geopolitical premium support outperformance versus broad equities over the one-month window.
  • Crude Oil (USO): 20% - Direct crude exposure captures the largest recent active returns and geopolitical premium more efficiently than equities for the short horizon.
  • Broad Commodities (PDBC): 20% - Diversified commodity basket benefits from energy spillover and inflation residual while offering lower single-name oil volatility.
  • US Large-Cap Value (IWD): 15% - Value tilt shows positive active return and lower drawdown versus growth/tech, aligning with equal-weight outperformance and defensive rotation.
  • Healthcare Sector (XLV): 15% - Strong recent active return, defensive characteristics, and shallow drawdown provide ballast with base case above SPY.
Key Risks
  • Rapid oil price reversal if geopolitical premium fades
  • FOMC hawkish surprise or tariff-driven risk-off hitting cyclicals
  • High volatility in OIL and ENERGY amplifying drawdowns
  • Commodity correlation breakdown if dollar strengthens sharply
