Prompt And Input Packet

The shared packet below is the prompt body common to every model call. Each provider call appends a small model-specific identifier block shown after the artifacts.

Shared Model-Facing Prompt Packet 33,774 characters
# CapitalBench portfolio-v2.2 Task

You are participating in an offline, time-resolved CapitalBench evaluation round. Every model receives the same frozen information and makes one single-turn, non-agentic decision without tools, browsing, retrieval, or follow-up.

Your objective is to allocate 100% across the allowed options to maximize expected realized portfolio return over the close-to-close one-week scoring window. The official comparison is the S&P 500 (SPY): alpha equals portfolio return minus SPY return. A 100% SPY portfolio is valid when no active option has a stronger base-case forecast.

Use only facts and mechanical market data supplied in this input. You may use internal learned knowledge and general priors, but do not intentionally rely on facts, prices, news, or events after the research cutoff. Treat section order, mention count, option order, and table order as neutral presentation choices rather than recommendation signals.

Price history is descriptive, not a forecast. Test both continuation and reversal for every finalist. A recent winner needs independent support in the supplied briefing or an explicitly stated weak-evidence caveat. Optimize for the stated horizon only.

Complete the decision in this order:

1. Assess SPY and 5-7 additional finalists, for a total candidate ledger of 6-8 unique options.
2. Include SPY in the ledger and span at least four listed economic-exposure clusters.
3. Give every candidate a low, base, and high return forecast in percentage points, with low <= base <= high.
4. Record concise supplied evidence, the continuation case, reversal case, time-window catalyst, and invalidation condition for every candidate. Keep rejected finalists in the ledger.
5. Select only active holdings whose base forecast is greater than SPY's base forecast. CASH is not an active holding. If no active option clears that hurdle, use SPY and/or CASH.
6. Construct the final 1-5 holding portfolio in the stated allocation increments. Outside SPY and CASH, no economic-exposure cluster may exceed the round's stated maximum.
7. Set each holding's expected_return_pct equal to that candidate's base forecast. Calculate the weighted portfolio base return and expected alpha versus SPY.

Return only valid JSON. Do not include markdown, citations, prose, or commentary outside the JSON.

Rationale

Overweight energy and commodities on the supplied oil supply-shock evidence, overweight communications on Alphabet's strong after-close results, with low-vol and SPY ballast into the July 29 FOMC.

Oil momentum and Alphabet's beat are the two strongest supplied catalysts inside the window; defensive sleeves hedge FOMC risk.

Portfolio
  • Communication Services Sector (XLC): 30% - Alphabet beat with 24% revenue growth, Cloud +82%, margin expansion; sector pulled back last week creating entry ahead of the report's price reaction inside the window.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 25% - Brent +3.4% to $94 with strong recent oil momentum and 96.1% refinery utilization; energy equities lag crude's move.
  • Broad Commodities (PDBC): 15% - Broad commodities show positive prior trend, strong 5-day active return, and unusual volume interest amid supply shocks and elevated inflation.
  • US Low Volatility Equities (SPLV): 15% - Defensive ballast into July 29 FOMC; negative SPY beta cushions hawkish-surprise risk while retaining positive base forecast.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 15% - Benchmark anchor to limit tracking error around the FOMC decision.
Key Risks
  • FOMC hawkish surprise on July 29 hits all risk assets
  • Oil price reversal on inventory builds (crude stocks rose 2.0M barrels)
  • Alphabet sells off despite headline beat given unrealized-gain-driven net income
  • Commodity inflation strength pressures equity multiples

Rationale

Balanced portfolio anchoring on SPY core while tilting toward energy strength and defensive dividend equities that showed strong recent relative returns with low volatility into an FOMC week.

Energy momentum plus defensive dividend leadership complement an SPY core into a rate-decision week.

Portfolio
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 30% - Strong active return with Brent up 3.4% and oil momentum; low beta diversifier ahead of tight energy inventories.
  • S&P 500 (SPY): 40% - Core broad exposure through FOMC week; strong Alphabet earnings support large-cap sentiment.
  • US Dividend Equities (SCHD): 30% - Highest recent active return (+2.71%) with very low beta and shallow drawdown; defensive tilt into FOMC.
Key Risks
  • Hawkish FOMC on July 29 triggers broad equity drawdown
  • Oil reverses sharply on inventory builds hurting energy sleeve

Rationale

The portfolio emphasizes candidates with near-week catalysts or cross-sectional evidence above SPY's base forecast while capping non-benchmark clusters. It balances Alphabet-related communications upside, commodity and energy momentum, financials around FOMC, and broader equal-weight breadth.

SPY's base case is modestly positive but not the strongest active forecast. Selected holdings each clear the SPY hurdle and span technology/growth, energy, commodities, financials, and diversified U.S. equity exposure.

Portfolio
  • Communication Services Sector (XLC): 25% - Alphabet's strong after-close revenue, margin, search, YouTube, and cloud growth provide a near-window mega-cap catalyst for communication services after a recent relative pullback.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 20% - Energy has strong prior and recent active performance with crude prices up sharply; sector exposure is less extreme than direct oil while still benefiting from oil momentum.
  • Broad Commodities (PDBC): 20% - Broad commodities combine strong recent and prior active returns with elevated volume, offering inflation and commodity momentum exposure outside pure energy.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 20% - Financials show strong prior active return and high quality evidence, with low correlation to SPY and moderate volatility supporting a one-week diversifier with upside.
  • Equal-Weight S&P 500 (RSP): 15% - Equal-weight S&P has outperformed SPY over 5 and 21 sessions with lower volatility and shallow drawdown, supporting modest breadth exposure.
Key Risks
  • FOMC communication on July 29 tightens financial conditions and pressures equities before the close.
  • Crude oil and commodity strength reverses after inventory data showed total commercial petroleum inventories up 11.6 million barrels.
  • Alphabet earnings reaction fades or is offset by broader growth-stock weakness.
  • Recent breadth leadership reverses back toward SPY's mega-cap concentration.

Rationale

The portfolio emphasizes a direct mega-cap earnings catalyst while diversifying into financials and energy, two clusters with positive relative trends. All active holdings have base forecasts above SPY, and no capped cluster exceeds 50%.

Alphabet's results create the strongest one-week catalyst, while Visa earnings, the FOMC decision, and elevated crude prices provide additional paths to outperformance.

  • Communication Services Sector (XLC): 50% - Alphabet's strong post-close revenue, cloud-growth, and margin results provide a direct near-term catalyst after the sector's recent relative pullback.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 30% - Strong prior relative performance and high cross-sectional quality are reinforced by Visa earnings before the exit close.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 20% - Rising crude prices and positive prior and recent relative returns support continuation, while the smaller weight limits reversal risk.
Key Risks
  • Alphabet's strong reported growth may already be reflected in expectations or be overshadowed by volatile unrealized gains.
  • A hawkish July 29 FOMC communication could pressure equities and reverse the communications rebound.
  • Rising petroleum inventories and weak product supplied could trigger a sharp crude and energy reversal.
  • Visa results could disappoint or signal weaker payment volumes.

Rationale

Portfolio concentrates in energy/commodities where price and inventory evidence is strongest while adding Alphabet-driven communications and financials for FOMC week diversification. All active legs carry base forecasts above SPY and respect the 50% cluster cap.

Energy complex leads on crude strength; communications benefits from Alphabet beat; financials offer FOMC optionality. Equal-weight and pure SPY lag the selected bases.

Portfolio
  • Crude Oil (USO): 30% - Strong recent oil price momentum and inventory/build data support continued energy strength into FOMC week.
  • Energy Sector (XLE): 20% - Sector levered to oil strength with positive prior active returns and quality support relative to broad market.
  • Broad Commodities (PDBC): 20% - Diversified commodity exposure capturing oil-linked and broader commodity momentum with elevated volume.
  • Communication Services Sector (XLC): 15% - Alphabet post-close beat with strong Cloud and services growth provides near-term catalyst for sector.
  • Financials Sector (XLF): 15% - Solid prior active trend and quality score with potential rate-path clarity from FOMC.
Key Risks
  • FOMC hawkish surprise triggering broad equity and commodity risk-off on July 29
  • Sudden crude inventory or demand disappointment reversing oil/energy gains
  • Post-earnings fade in Alphabet/communications names
  • Elevated single-cluster (energy) volatility within the 50% cap
